Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA):"The mission of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations and principal members of organizations, involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States; and to recommend and support non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on the domestic and international markets. " ******************************************************
Emergency Narcotic Addiction Treatment, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA):"The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) have received numerous inquiries requesting clarification of the three- day (72 hour) exception to the separate registration requirement for maintenance or detoxification treatment. In addition, confusion continues to exist whether practitioners may prescribe Buprenex, a Schedule V controlled substance for maintenance and detoxification treatment.
A practitioner who dispenses Schedule II narcotic drugs for maintenance and/or detoxification must obtain separate registration as a narcotic treatment program pursuant to the Narcotic Addict Treatment Act of 1974. This registration allows a practitioner to administer or dispense, but not prescribe, Schedule II narcotic drugs that are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of narcotic addiction. Methadone and levo-alpha-acetyl-methadol (LAAM) are the only drugs approved for use in maintenance and detoxification treatment. If a practitioner plans to use any other narcotic drug for addiction treatment, prior authorization must be obtained from FDA through an Investigational New Drug Application. Registration with DEA is contingent upon proper registration with the State Methadone Authority, and Health and Human Services." ******************************************************
Narcotic Analgesics For Surgery and Obstetrics (Systemic), Medline Plus:"Narcotic analgesics are given to relieve pain before and during surgery (including dental surgery) or during labor and delivery. These medicines may also be given before or together with an anesthetic (either a general anesthetic or a local anesthetic), even when the patient is not in pain, to help the anesthetic work better.
When a narcotic analgesic is used for surgery or obstetrics (labor and delivery), it will be given by or under the immediate supervision of a medical doctor or dentist, or by a specially trained nurse, in the doctor's office or in a hospital.
The following information applies only to these special uses of narcotic analgesics. If you are taking or receiving a narcotic analgesic to relieve pain after surgery, or for any other reason, ask your health care professional for additional information about the medicine and its use." ******************************************************
What are pain killers? Cancer Research, UK:"Painkillers are also called 'analgesics' or 'analgesia'. There are many different types and strengths of painkillers suitable for different types of pain. The strongest painkillers used for controlling cancer pain are called opioids. You may also be given non opioid drugs such as anti inflammatories. Other drugs can also be used. For example, anti-depressants can help with nerve pain. Many people use alternative methods of pain control either with or without painkillers." ******************************************************
Pharmaceutical Diversion Education:"Pharmaceutical Diversion Education is designed to assist a wide range of the population in understanding the potential abuse and addiction that can be associated with prescription medication. Year after year, Drug Enforcement Administration statistics indicate that pharmaceuticals are almost 30% of the overall drug problem in the United States, running a close second only to cocaine abuse. However, until recently, law enforcement, health care professionals, and the general public have placed little emphasis on this huge problem."
