Thank you for paying us a visit! This site owned/operated by Andrew & Melanie Lopez. For our Ask A Nurse service, please click here Andrew and Melanie are Registered Nurses. Andrew works Subacute Rehab in Southern New Jersey, is married to Melanie (ICU, Oncology), father to Autumn. Andrew's been working on the Nursefriendly since 1997. The goal was for it was initially to generate enough money for him to stay home more with his family. At this point, the website generates enough for Andrew to work agency a few days/week, and be there for family/school functions. For other nurses contemplating starting a business online, we'd be happy to compare notes. In 2001, Andrew became a stay at home father, working a few days agency each month to keep up his license/skills. His days revolve around watching Autumn grow, expanding the Nursefriendly to cover more healthcare/entrepreneur topics and helping Nurse Entrepreneurs get started online.

That is, websites that we would be comfortable using ourselves or referring patients and family members to. The web is everchanging, and what was relevant in the past, may not be today. Our directory (of hundreds of thousands of links to other sites) is constantly being reviewed, repaired, updated, and upgraded to keep it as fresh as possible. We would appreciate you contacting us about broken links if and when they are discovered.

Attitude indicator and activity monitoring device, United States Patent 6611783, Freepatentsonline.com:"Abstract: An attitude indicator device for detecting, indicating, and/or logging the positional attitude of an individual in response to deviation from a set of one or more reference angles. By way of example and not of limitation, the device is mounted on the thigh of a patient and measurements are taken from an acceleration sensor within the device. The acceleration measurements are communicated to a receiver when the measurements deviate from acceptable thresholds, whereby the receiver indicates an alert condition. The device may be employed within numerous medical related applications, for example, to facilitate preventing patient egress and the prevention/detection of patient falls."

Since then a "Nurse Friendly" designation has been adopted by the Texas Nursing Association and other organizations. More info on that here:
ETMC (East Texas Medical Center) Named Nurse-Friendly Designated Hospital:"ETMC has earned the Nurse-FriendlyTM hospital designation of the Texas Nurses Association, a superior achievement certifying the hospital as having the ideal nursing practice environment. ETMC joins an elite group of 31 hospitals in the state who have earned the three-year designation.
"This prestigious award comes only to organizations that are truly committed to their nurses and have processes in place to support and promote professional growth of their nurses," said Cherie Murphy, RN, ETMC vice president of patient services. "However, we measure our success by how our efforts improve the quality of life for people in East Texas." ******************************************************
Nurse Friendly Facilities update; Pathway to Excellence:"In late October the American Nurses Credentialing Center chose the name Pathway to Excellence for the Nurse Friendly Facilities program (purchased in July, 2007 from the Texas Nurses Association). The plan is moving forward on implementation of the Pathway to Excellence program here in New Mexico.
Many nurses, mid-managers, and CNOs (Chief Nursing Officers) have read about this program in the NM Nurse, or have heard about it here or from colleagues in Texas, and are looking forward to using the Pathway to Excellence as a means of improving nursing work environments" ******************************************************
Texas Nurses Association Announces Newest Nurse-Friendly Designated Hospitals:"The Nurse-Friendly designation program was introduced by Texas Nurses Association just two years ago in response to broad-reaching, evidence-based research that correlated direct nursing care to positive patient outcomes, and brought to light the transformation necessary in the work environment of nurses if safe, quality patient care was to be realized and nurses were to be retained in a profession that since 1998 had been experiencing a severe workforce shortage. Still the largest segment of the health care workforce, nurses passionate about caring for patients had been driven out of the profession in part due to the practice environment." ******************************************************
Valley Regional Medical Center-Brownsville (Nurseonline.us):"American Nurses Credentialing Center bestowed a "Pathway to Excellence" designation on the facility, which means the organization has deemed the working environment friendly to nurses.
To receive this designation, the hospital must meet several criteria, including offering continuing education opportunities; encouraging feedback from nurses on patient care; establishing nursing-leadership organizations in the hospital; and offering competitive pay, hospital officials said.
The process of applying for this designation "forces a facility to look at the environment from a nursing perspective," said Christine Trejo, Valley Regional's director of education. "You have to ask if it's a good place (for nurses) to work, to grow and to have a balanced life." ******************************************************
Woodland Heights Medical Center, Nurse Friendly Hospital:"Woodland Heights Medical Center is proud to be one of few hospitals in the state of Texas that is designated as a Nurse Friendly hospital. In order to be selected as a Nurse Friendly hospital, Woodland Heights Medical Center had to meet twelve essential elements (as defined by nurses and research) that represent the ideal practice environment. Key to the designation process, the hospital's own nurses had to confirm through confidential, online surveying that their facility is committed to nurses, and values their contributions in its overall pursuit of safe, quality patient care. The Texas Nurses Association sponsors the Nurse Friendly program. Read more about the Nurse Friendly hospitals." ******************************************************
What is a "Nurse Friendly Facility?" (name will change in near future).:"The Texas Nurses Association developed a program called the Nurse Friendly Facility program to meet the needs of nurses working in the many small rural facilities in that state, because many felt that the ANCC Magnet Program was expensive and didn't meet the needs of the small facilities. They now have 39 facilities, including a long term care facility, that have been designated as Nurse Friendly." ****************************************************** ******************************************************
