Coping With Chronic Illness...Dr. Julie Righter
Illness, pain or disability got you depressed? Many scientific studies have shown that psychological treatment improves quality of life, and in some cases, seems to prolong it. Combining knowledge gained from my medical background, my specialized psychotherapy training, and my personal experiences with illness, I have developed my own holistic approach, without the use of antidepressants or tranquilizers. Do you or someone you know suffer from illness or disability stress? Your illness might cause symptoms (e.g. colitis),worries (e.g. MS), embarassment (e.g. ostomy, disfigurement), limitations (e.g. paralysis), fears (e.g. Hepatitis C). View a list of medical conditions I can help you deal with."

Do nurse anesthetists demonstrate gender bias in treating pain? AANA J. 2003 June;71(3);206-9:"A major responsibility of the nurse anesthetist is providing adequate pain relief. Current research suggests that provider gender, as well as patient gender, may affect the clinical assessment and treatment of pain. Implications of the undertreatment of pain may be avoided if the anesthetist is aware of potential gender bias when approaching a given clinical situation."

Integration Of Behavioral And Relaxation Approaches Into The Treatment Of Chronic Pain And Insomnia:"Chronic pain and insomnia afflict millions of Americans. Facts About Cancer Pain:"Pain is common with cancer. More than two-thirds of individuals with cancer will experience pain during their illness. Cancer pain is often undertreated because pain medications and other therapies are not used appropriately. Some health professionals as well as patients and families are concerned about opioid (narcotic) analgesic side effects and addiction. Undertreated cancer pain destroys the quality of life. Unrelieved pain may lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, anger, isolation and even to thoughts of suicide."

Back Pain:

Back Pain and Sciatica:"Back pain is very common and a major cause of disability and days off work. It is usually non-inflammatory ("mechanical") in origin. It is often due simply to bad posture, incorrect lifting of heavy loads or sometimes previous injury. Often this type of back pain can be helped by exercises to strengthen back muscles, improvement of bad posture and lifting technique, and sometimes a lumbar support corset. Pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs are also used for symptom relief."

Fibromyalgia:

Post-Traumatic Fibromyalgia, Mark J. Pellegrino MD:"Doctors who treat large numbers of fibromyalgia patients report that the majority of patients say that their fibromyalgia was caused by an injury. In my own private practice, I analyzed patients with the diagnosis of fibromyalgia to determine the cause. From 1990 to 1995, 2,000 records of fibromyalgia patients were reviewed. Of those, 65% reported the onset of their symptoms of fibromyalgia after a traumatic event. Of this group, 52% of them were involved in a motor vehicle accident, 31% had work injuries, and the remaining 17% had another type of trauma; included in this category were sports injuries, recreational injuries, fractures, surgical procedures, head injuries and pregnancy. Of the post-traumatic patients involved in motor vehicle accidents, whiplash injury was the most common type of trauma."

Fibromyalgia following trauma: psychology or biology?:"The concept that fibromyalgia may follow trauma is currently an area of intense debate within the medical field and is driven to a large extent by social and legal issues. This article questions whether the current literature supports the notion that trauma may cause fibromyalgia and explores the relative contribution of biology and psychology in the development of and sense of disability from fibromyalgia."

Headaches, Migraines:

instantheadacherelief.com, Jerry Teplitz Enterprises, Inc.:"If you're like most people struggling to be free of pain, you've tried it all: painkillers, heating pads, icepacks, herbs and probably more methods that get you nowhere. You're tired of your pain, and you're tired of waiting for remedies to take effect when all you want to do is just stop hurting - NOW! You've tried everything to stop your chronic aches, only to be disappointed. Worse yet, with so many so-called "cures" saturating the market, you can become paralyzed by the variety of choices -- very frustrated. With every moment, every single day you hesitate to do something about your suffering, you miss out on many of life's pleasures because of your discomfort."

Migraine Awareness Group: A National Understanding for Migraineurs, M.A.G.N.U.M.: Migraine Awareness Group: A National Understanding for Migraineurs, is a non-profit health care public education organization conceived in 1993 and incorporated in 1994 to bring public and government awareness to the medical seriousness of the migraine disease. Migraine disease affects approximately 30 million Americans, with up to 38 million Americans having migraine genetic propensity. Those who suffer from the most serious and disabling type of migraine, Intractable Migraine, work against great odds to hold jobs and to support families. It was out of the personal experiences of MAGNUM founder Michael John Coleman, who has suffered from Intractable Migraine since the age of six, that MAGNUM was formed."
