Nurses' Uniforms - The Infection Risk, Royal College of Nursing (RCN):"Hazel Price, RCN Bromley Branch, introduced this matter for discussion by saying that several studies had shown there to be an infection risk through dirty uniforms. She said that some nurses did not always wash their hands, and some wore a uniform for more than one day.
There was sometimes resistance from NHS trusts about supplying one uniform a day because of costs. Also many hospitals lacked decent changing facilities. She concluded by saying that it was important that nurses considered how to implement hygiene practices.
The first speaker said she had seen doctors using their white coats for picnics in the summer. As an ITU nurse she worked in a high-risk area where strict hygiene procedures were followed. She said nurses should not be afraid to send medical colleagues to the sink to wash their hands and employers must be made to realise possible infection risks."
