Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: Our profession has taken a back seat to other medical specialties over the past years.

An example of this is the ability of a Physician Assistant to perform surgery essentially unsupervised harvesting the sapphaneous vein for CABG procedures. While this is really supervised by the cardiac surgeon do you really think that he is watching the PA while he is inside the chest of the patient All PA27s that I am familiar with are pr epared at the Bachelors level. On the other hand Clinical Nurse Practitioners prepared at the masters level are not permitted to even inject lidocaine into a wound unless authorized by an attending physician or with a written protocol. Nor can they order routine lab tests in the hospital setting without a counter signature from the supervising physician.

THIS IS LUDICROUS I believe that in the early days of nursing there was a view that nurses were not as well prepared as PAs and unfortunately this perception has continued to exist. It is time that we the nursing profession take hold of our own destiny and insist that things change within the realm of medicine
