The Board is comprised of seven registered professional nurses and an eighth consumer member. As part of their responsibilities, board members develop rules and regulations that set the standards for nursing practice and education, provide the minimum qualifications for licensure, and ensure that disciplinary process is implemented in a fashion that guarantees due process and public protection. Nov. 2, 2000: Georgia Nurses Association and Present State's Highest Nursing Honor:""The Georgia Nurses Association, along with, a company (NASDAQ: HHNT) and the leading healthcare recruiting site on the Internet, awarded the state's highest honor for distinguished service to Mary Long, RN, group vice president special projects with the Arthritis Foundation. "With 80,000 registered nurses in the state, the Association found many deserving of recognition, but Mary Long, RN, continuously rises above and beyond the call of duty," said Debbie Hatmaker, PhD, RN, president of the Georgia Nurses Association. Long has also served as Second Vice President, American Nurses Association, and on the Board of Trustees for the American Nurses Foundation and as president of the Georgia Nurses Association and the Georgia Nurses Foundation. Long started her career at Grady Memorial Hospital as a staff nurse in Ambulatory Care, becoming charge nurse and later Director, Community Health/Central Referral. HB 1655 - Nursing homes; registered nurses pronounce death, Georgia House of Representatives - 1995/1996 Sessions:"When a patient dies in any facility classified as a nursing home by the department and operating under a permit issued by the department, a physician's assistant or a registered professional nurse licensed in this state and employed by such nursing home at the time of apparent death of such person, in the absence of a physician, may make the determination and pronouncement of the death of said patient; provided, however, that, when said patient is a registered organ donor, only a physician may make the determination or pronouncement of death; provided, further, that when it appears that a patient died from other than natural causes, only a physician may make the determination or pronouncement of death. Such determination or pronouncement shall be made in writing on a form approved by the department."
