Reminyl (galantamine); Biopsychiatry.com:"Galantamine (also called galanthamine, marketed as Reminyl (Janssen)) was isolated from several plants, including daffodil bulbs, but is now synthesized. Galantamine is a specific, competitive, and reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It is also an allosteric modulator at nicotinic cholinergic receptor sites potentiating cholinergic nicotinic neurotransmission. A small number of early studies showed mild cognitive and global benefits for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and recently several multicenter clinical trials have been published with positive findings."

Reminyl (galantamine); Drugs.com:"Galantamine is used to treat Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is associated with low levels of a chemical called acetylcholine (ah see til KOH leen) in the brain. The exact way that galantamine works is unknown. However, it is believed that galantamine prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain. Galantamine is used to improve thinking and memory in patients with Alzheimer's disease."

Reminyl (galantamine); alzwisc.org:"In some people, these drug treatments may improve daily life by enhancing memory and cognitive ability. To date, four prescription medications have been approved by the FDA for treatment of AD: tacrine (Cognex®), donepezil (Aricept®), rivastigmine (Exelon®), and galantamine (Reminylâ). Because of concern over serious side effects, tacrine (Cognexâ) is rarely prescribed today...Donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine increase the amount of acetylcholine available which improves cell to cell communication in the brain. They do this by blocking an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down acetylcholine in the space between nerve cells. Due to this action, these drugs are known as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors."

Reminyl (galantamine); pslgroup.com:"October 26, 2000 -- Reminyl™ (galantamine), a new treatment for Alzheimer’s disease was introduced today across Europe by Janssen-Cilag. Clinical trials have shown that treatment with Reminyl produces significant and sustained benefits in cognition (memory, attention and decision making abilities), global function and delays the emergence of behavioural disturbances in Alzheimer’s disease."

However, it is believed that galantamine prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain. Galantamine is used to improve thinking and memory in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Reminyl (galantamine);surgerydoor.co.uk:"Dementia is a loss of intellectual abilities. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease. People often find that they lose their memory, especially of things that happened recently, and may also find it difficult to learn new things. A doctor who is a specialist in this field should diagnose dementia. These medications may help to slow down the effects of mild and moderate dementia. There are a number of new medications available for the treatment of mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease which are called donepezil (Aricept), galantamine (Reminyl) and rivastigmine (Exelon)."

Reminyl (galantamine); docguide.com:"OBJECTIVE: To review the historic, pharmacologic, pharmacokinetic, therapeutic, and toxicologic features of galantamine, a new acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, and to assess its role in the treatment of Alzheimer disease symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Galantamine is a useful agent for the treatment of Alzheimer disease and for the reversal of neuromuscular blockade. It acts as both an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and a nicotinic receptor agonist."

Reminyl (galantamine); bluecrossmn.com:"Take this medication by mouth, usually twice daily with food (at the morning and evening meals), or as directed. Drink plenty of fluids with this medication unless instructed otherwise. Your dose will be adjusted over time (titrated) until the right amount of medicine is determined. Reminyl (galantamine); bnf.vhn.net:"Acetylcholinesterase inhibiting drugs are used in the treatment of Alzheimers disease, specifically for mild to moderate disease. The evidence to support the use of these drugs relates to their cognitive enhancement. Treatment with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors should be initiated and supervised only by a specialist experienced in the management of dementia. Galantamine is a reversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase and it also has nicotinic receptor agonist properties. It is given twice daily."
