Requip, (Ropinirole), Drug Intel:"Requip: Dopamine agonists used to treat Parkinson disease have been known to be sedative. A strong trend has been recently recognized for sudden "sleep attacks" to be caused by some Parkinsonism therapeutics. Anti-Parkinson drugs are dopamine agonists and include (generic names) the drugs listed below. All of these have caused sleep attacks, but ropinirole, bromocriptine, and pramipexole have done so with much higher frequency than the others. L-DOPA is an indirectly acting dopamine agonist that appears to not have this troubling side effect."

Ropinirole, Ropinirole Reduces Common Parkinson's Symptoms, Doctor's Guide:"St. PAUL, MN -- October 20, 1998 -- SmithKline Beecham’s Requip® (ropinirole) improves symptoms for Parkinson's patients experiencing stiff, slow or jerky movements, according to a study published in the current issue of the journal Neurology.  Researchers studied 109 Parkinson's patients over six months. Throughout the study patients used levodopa therapy. In addition, 74 patients were given ropinirole and 35 were given a placebo. "Substituting ropinirole and reducing levodopa gives patients relief from Parkinson's symptoms, plus reduces some side effects of levodopa," said neurologist and study author Abraham Lieberman, MD, national medical director of the National Parkinson's Foundation in Miami, FL. "Thirty-five percent of patients taking ropinirole reduced their dose of levodopa by 20 percent, this in turn decreased stiffness, slowness and jerkiness of muscles by 20 percent." Additionally, patients on ropinirole and levodopa improved their scores on aParkinson's rating scale measuring rigidity and movement. Parkinson's disease causes the brain to lose dopamine, which results in stiffness and rigidity of the muscles, slowness in movement and tremor of the arms and legs. Levodopa, the main treatment for the disease, is metabolised in the brain as dopamine. The brain's ability to metabolise and store levodopa diminishes after time and it becomes more dependent on the external supply of levodopa. Eventually most patients experience fluctuations when the medication is working and when it is not working in the body."

It is unknown if this drug enters breast milk; consult doctor. Warnings/Precautions: Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities as this drug may cause drowsiness and dizziness. Requip, (Ropinirole), The National Parkinson Foundation, Incorporated:"Slower progression in Early Parkinson's Disease.  Treated with Ropinirole Compared with L-Dopa. Presented American Academy of Neurology, April 2002 Denver Colorado. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relative progression of early PD patients treated with the dopamine agonist ropinirole. (Requip) versus L-dopa as evidenced by brain 18F-dopa uptake. BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no medication proven to have disease modifying properties in PD. Preclinical studies have shown ropinirole (Requip) to have neuro-protective properties. Pilot 18F-dopa PET data from a cohort of 45 PD patients showed a trend towards 20% slower disease progression in ropinirole (Requip) versus L-dopa treated patients. The REAL-PET study was designed to confirm this potential."

Requip, (Ropinirole), Discovery Health Channel:"What are the treatments for the disease? There is no cure for Parkinson's disease. The major goal of treatment is to prevent deterioration. Symptoms can usually be well controlled for several years in the early stages of the disease. Early in the disease, medications are used. One of the most common medicines is a combination of levodopa and carbidopa. Although this combination is effective, it tends to work less and less over time. Other medications used to treat Parkinson's disease include the following: · amantadine · pergolide · pramipexole · ropinirole · selegiline. Another treatment is surgery. Surgery can include removal of a tiny part of the brain. Another approach is deep brain stimulation with electricity. People may need other treatments to deal with the many problems associated with the disease. If dementia is present, close monitoring may be needed. Treatment with antidepressants, antipsychotic medications, or sedatives can also help relieve some symptoms. Physical and occupational therapy, as well as speech therapy may help. The use of a service dog and in-home care may be needed. Other medications may be used in late-stage Parkinson's disease to control symptoms. Medicines can be helpful when there are problems with bladder control, for example. Men with Parkinson's disease may be given medications for erectile dysfunction. Researchers continue to test new treatments for Parkinson's disease. Implanting fetal cells into the brain of people with Parkinson's disease was recently tried and failed. In some people, the treatment caused severe problems with movement."

Requip, (Ropinirole), Rxlist:"INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS: Patients should be instructed to take Requip only as prescribed. Requip can be taken with or without food. Since ingestion with food reduces the maximum concentration (C max ) of Requip , patients should be advised that taking Requip with food may reduce the occurrence of nausea. However, this has not been established in controlled clinical trials. Patients should be informed that hallucinations can occur, and that the elderly are at a higher risk than younger patients with Parkinson's disease."

Requip, (Ropinirole), Medline plus:"Other medicines: Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are taking ropinirole, it is especially important that your health care professional know if you are taking any of the following: Carbidopa and levodopa combinations (e.g., Sinemet) or Levodopa (e.g., Dopar, Larodopa). Ropinirole may cause an increase in the side effects of levodopa; your doctor may need to adjust your dosage."

Requip, (Ropinirole), Getting Well Network:"Recommended dosage: ADULTS: Requip is taken 3 times a day. During the first week of therapy, each dose is 0.25 milligram. During the second week, the amount rises to 0.5 milligram. In the third week, it increases to 0.75 milligram, and in the fourth week reaches 1 milligram (3 milligrams daily). If necessary, your doctor will gradually increase the dosage further, up to a maximum of 24 milligrams per day. If you need to stop Requip therapy, the doctor will discontinue the drug gradually over a 7-day period, reducing the number of doses from 3 to 2 per day for the first 4 days, then to once a day for the remaining 3 days."

Requip, (Ropinirole), Health Square:"Why is this drug prescribed? Requip helps relieve the signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Caused by a deficit of dopamine (one of the brain's chief chemical messengers), this disorder is marked by progressive muscle stiffness, tremor, and fatigue. Requip works by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, thus promoting better, easier movement. Requip can be taken with or without levodopa (usually prescribed as Sinemet), another drug used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease."
