Cerivastatin Sodium(Baycol), Indications, RXlist.com:"Therapy with lipid- altering drugs should be a component of multiple risk factor intervention in those patients at significantly high risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. BAYCOL (cerivastatin sodium tablets) is indicated as an adjunct to diet for the reduction of elevated total and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia (Fredrickson Types IIa and IIb) when the response to dietary restriction of saturated fat and cholesterol and other non-pharmacological measures alone has been inadequate."

Cerivastatin Sodium, Clinical Pharmacology, Mosby'sDRUGConsult:"Cerivastatin is a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, which is responsible for the conversion of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) to mevalonate, a precursor of sterols, including cholesterol. The inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis by cerivastatin reduces the level of cholesterol in hepatic cells, which stimulates the synthesis of LDL receptors, thereby increasing the uptake of cellular LDL particles. The end result of these biochemical processes is a reduction of the plasma cholesterol concentration."

Cerivastatin Sodium(Baycol), General Information, CenterWatch.com:"Baycol (cerivastatin sodium), a new cholesterol-lowering agent by Bayer Corporation, was initially FDA approved in 1997. Baycol is a statin indicated as an adjunct to diet for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia who have not responded adequately to dietary restrictions and other non-pharmacological measures. Baycol has been shown to be effective at relatively low doses at lowering LDL-cholesterol as well as total cholesterol and triglycerides. However, the company voluntarily withdrew Baycol from the market on August 8, 2001 because of reports of sometimes fatal rhabdomyolysis, a severe muscle adverse reaction from the cholesterol-lowering product. The FDA received reports of 31 US deaths due to severe rhabdomyolsis from Baycol.

Cerivastatin Sodium(Baycol), Uses, Nurses pdr:"Adjunct to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-C, apo B and TG levels in clients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia where hypercholesterolemia is the major finding (Fredrickson types IIa and IIb) when response to diet or other non-pharmacologic approaches have been inadequate. Treatment is important in clients at significantly high risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia."

Cerivastatin Sodium(Baycol), FDA Approves New Baycol (Cerivastatin) Dosage and Additional Indication for Hypercholesterolemia, July 24, 2000, Doctors's Guide:"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have just approved the marketing of a new 0.8mg dosage of Bayer's Baycol® (cerivastatin sodium tablets) for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, along with an additional indication for the brand for raising HDL cholesterol."

Cerivastatin Sodium(Baycol), Baycol Alert, LawandHelp.com:" On August 8, 2001, the Bayer Corporation, with headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA, withdrew the prescription cholesterol lowering drug BAYCOL from the United States market, citing ever increasing "reports of side effects involving muscle weakness (rhabdomyolysis)...."

Cerivastatin Sodium(Baycol), How does this medication work?,MediResource:"As of August 8, 2001, cerivastatin has been removed from the market because cases of fatal rhabdomyolysis in association with its use have been reported significantly more than for other approved "statins." Rhabdomyolysis is a condition that results in muscle cell breakdown and release of the contents of muscle cells into the bloodstream. Fatal rhabdomyolysis reports with Baycol have been reported most frequently when used at higher doses, when used in elderly patients, and particularly when used in combination with gemfibrozil (Lopid® and generics), another lipid lowering drug."
