Minocycline, Clinical Pharmacology, RXlist:"The tetracyclines are primarily bacteriostatic and are thought to exert their antimicrobial effect by the inhibition of protein synthesis. The tetracyclines, including minocycline, have similar antimicrobial spectra of activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Cross-resistance of these organisms to tetracyclines is common." http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/minocycline_cp.htm ******************************************************
Minocycline, Description, MEDLINEplus:"Minocycline ( mi-noe-SYE-kleen)is used to help treat periodontal disease (a disease of your gums). Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria growing beneath the gum line. Minocycline works by keeping the number of bacteria from growing. Lowering the amount of bacteria helps to reduce inflammation and swelling in your mouth, and the amount of bleeding around the teeth. Minocycline is placed in deep gum pockets next to your teeth in order to reduce the depth of the pockets." ******************************************************
Minocycline, Disease Database, American Osteopathic College of Dermatology:"Minocycline pills are antibiotics sold as Minocin, Dynacin, Vectrin and generic minocycline. This antibiotic has been in use since the 1970's and is a great acne therapy. It kills the acne bacteria more effectively than many other acne pills and has a separate "anti-inflammatory" effect. This means it reduces the redness, swelling and tenderness or pimples whether it kills the acne bacteria or not. Because of this effect, minocycline is now also being used for some people with painful, swollen joints." ******************************************************
Minocycline, Minocycline in Rheumatoid Arthritis, January 15, 1995, Annals of Internal Medicine:"Minocycline was safe and effective for patients with mild to moderate rheumatoid arthritis. Its mechanisms of action remain to be determined." ******************************************************
Minocycline, Minocycline-induced Lupus Syndrome, Spring 2000, Organising Medical Networked Information:"Minocycline is an antibiotic used most commonly for the treatment of young people with troublesome acne. Minocycline is a convenient treatment for acne as it needs only to be taken once a day and it is an effective agent because it can penetrate well to the areas where it acts. In the U.K. there were an estimated 800,000 prescriptions for minocycline in 1993 and 188,000 individuals were started on minocycline for acne in 1995. However use dropped to about 70% of previous levels following a report from Leeds in 1996 of the occurrence of lupus and hepatitis in some individuals with acne on minocycline. About 50 cases of lupus associated with the use of minocycline have been reported in the literature and of course there will be many times that number that go unreported." ******************************************************
