Zoloft, Healthsquare.com:"Why is this drug prescribed? Zoloft is prescribed for major depressive disorder--a persistently low mood that interferes with everyday living. Symptoms may include loss of interest in your usual activities, disturbed sleep, change in appetite, constant fidgeting or lethargic movement, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and recurrent thoughts of suicide. Zoloft is also used in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder--symptoms of which include unwanted thoughts that won't go away and an irresistible urge to keep repeating certain actions, such as hand-washing or counting."

Sertraline Drug monograph, Pharmacology, Internet Mental Health:"The antidepressant effect of sertraline is presumed to be linked to its ability to inhibit the neuronal reuptake of serotonin. It has only very weak effects on norepinephrine and dopamine neuronal reuptake. At clinical doses, sertraline blocks the uptake of serotonin into human platelets. Like most clinically effective antidepressants, sertraline downregulates brain norepinephrine and serotonin receptors in animals. In receptor binding studies, sertraline has no significant affinity for adrenergic (alpha(1), alpha(2) and beta), cholinergic, GABA, dopaminergic, histaminergic, serotonergic (5-HT1A, 5-HT1B, 5-HT2) or benzodiazepine binding sites. In placebo-controlled studies in normal volunteers, sertraline did not cause sedation and did not interfere with psychomotor performance."

Zoloft, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill:"What are the side effects? The most common side effects of Zoloft include nausea, diarrhea or loose stools, tremor, insomnia, drowsiness, and dry mouth. These are usually mild; only a small number of patients have discontinued treatment because of side effects. Other potential side effects include increased sweating and sexual problems (delayed ejaculation/orgasm). Although older antidepressants often cause weight gain, 1-2 pound weight loss has been noticed in some people. Zoloft does not seem to cause dizziness upon standing up, and has few cardiac effects."
