Celexa, mentalhealthandillness.com:"Celexa is the newest antidepressant to be approved by the FDA. It is the most selectively acting on serotonin of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It has been used in Europe for almost a decade, and a total of 8 million patients have been prescribed Celexa. It has many similarities to the other SSRI's-Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and Luvox. Like any antidepressant, not everyone responds or tolerates any given medication. Treatment must always be individualized. Many patients report a lifting of their mood one week after treatment is started. Like the other SSRI's, it is a broad spectrum psychotropic. In addition to helping depression, it also helps in the treatment of panic disorder and obscessive compulsive disorder (OCD), but these are not yet FDA approved indications. Higher doses are generally needed for OCD. Like the other SSRI's, it has been my experience that it also is helpful in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder and social phobia/anxiety disorder." http://www.mentalhealthandillness.com/question/Celexa.html ******************************************************
Celexa:"On July 17, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for marketing the new antidepressant medication, Celexa (citalopram hydrobromide). This highly selective SSRI has already been available throughout Europe, where it has been clinically used for the treatment of depression in more than eight million people.
Results from studies show that Celexa improves the symptoms of depression, regardless of patient age, race, or gender. In addition, other studies indicate that Celexa may be effective in preventing relapse of depression." ******************************************************
Citalopram Hydrobromide
Brand Name: Celexa, whatmeds.com:"Overview: Celexa is the brand name for Citalopram, an SSRI — Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. SSRIs work by raising or restoring serotonin levels and relieving depression. Celexa is a relatively new drug: introduced in the United States in 1998, though it has been used in Europe since 1989.
The effects of this medication can usually be seen in two to three weeks, though some patients may require four or more weeks to feel better." ******************************************************
Celexa, fda.gov:"Who should not take Celexa? You should not take Celxa if you are currently taking certain other antidepressant medications in the group called monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine. You should stop taking MAO inhibitors 2 weeks before starting Celexa, and you should be off Celexa for 2 weeks before starting on MAO inhibitor medication." ******************************************************
