How your company is watching your waistline:"Employers tried the carrot, then a small stick. Now they are turning to bigger cudgels. For years they encouraged workers to improve their health and productivity with free screenings, discounted gym memberships and gift cards to lose weight. More recently, a small number charged smokers slightly higher premiums to get them to quit. Results for these plans were lackluster, and healthcare costs continued to soar. So companies are taking advantage of new rules under President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul in 2014 to punish smokers and overweight workers."

Vanderbilt Medical Center to have nurses cleaning up:"The Channel 4 I-Team has learned some Vanderbilt nurses will now be in charge of cleaning patients' rooms, even bathrooms. Sanitized environments in hospitals are critical to a patient's health, but the new cost cutting measure has at least one nurse concerned. "Cleaning the room after the case, including pulling your trash and mopping the floor, are all infection-prevention strategies. And it's all nursing, and it's all surgical tech. You may not believe that, but even Florence Nightingale knew that was true," said a hospital administrator to staff in a video obtained by the Channel 4 I-Team. The new cleaning changes were also detailed in an email sent to staff of the Vanderbilt Medical Center East team, which - according to a hospital employee - works in surgery areas and patient rooms." https://www.facebook.com/groups/nurseup/511253015625386/

The Office Nurse Now Treats Diabetes, Not Headaches, July 9, 2013:"Workplace health clinics used to be a lot like the school nurse's office, dispensing Band-Aids, treating occupational injuries, and serving as a first stop for emergencies like asthma attacks. But as companies face rising insurance costs and an aging workforce, they're turning clinics into something new: A place to aggressively nudge employees about long-term, expensive conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. There is more money than ever at stake. Chronic diseases account for more than 65% of all corporate health-care spending, according to a 2012 Aon AON -0.16% Hewitt report."

Shelton: U.S. pays billions, and lives, for poor health literacy, Sara Shelton:"How does $106 billion to $236 billion in costs sound to you as a taxpayer? That is the cost of low health literacy in the U.S. Health literacy is more than reading skills. It includes writing, listening, speaking, arithmetic and conceptual knowledge. Low health literacy can affect anyone regardless of age, ethnicity, background, or education level, but those with limited literacy skills overall report poorer health. Studies show the majority of those with low health literacy are white, native-born Americans."

Kicking McDonald's out: the hospitals getting serious about food, Huffington Post:"All across the country, hospitals like this one in San Francisco are rethinking what's on its menu and in the cafeterias. Prompted by skyrocketing rates of diet-related illnesses and with ever greater understanding of the role of good nutrition, public health professionals are starting to get serious about food. In the past few months, hospitals are even stepping up to tell junk food purveyors to leave the premises. In January 2013, Truman Medical Centers in Kansas City, Missouri announced it was ending its lease with a McDonald's in its facility. The hospital CEO said that having a McDonald's right next to its revamped, healthier cafeteria, sends an "inconsistent message."

10 Medical Errors That Can Kill You in the Hospital, by Leana Wen, M.D. in The Doctor Is Listening:"In my last post, you met Paul Hastings, the recently-retired accountant about to embark on an around-the-world trip who ended up with one-way ticket to the hospital instead. More people die from medical mistakes than they do from car accidents, pneumonia, and diabetes. No doubt, this is a shocking statistic. Before we discuss what you can do about it, let's first talk about the 10 most common errors that can occur during your hospital stay: #1. Misdiagnosis. The most common type of medical error is error in diagnosis. This is not surprising, since the right diagnosis is the key to your entire medical error. A wrong diagnosis can result in delay in treatment, sometimes with deadly consequences. Not receiving a diagnosis can be dangerous too; this is why it's so important to aim to figure out what you have, not just a list of things that you don't have."

HHS: Hospitals ignoring requirements to report errors, USA Today:"Hospitals are ignoring state regulations that require them to report cases in which medical care harmed a patient, making it almost impossible for health care providers to identify and fix preventable problems, a report to be released today by the Department of Health and Human Services inspector general shows. Hospitals may avoid blame for errors when they don't report preventable problems, but they lose the chance to track issues, such as new infections making their way through hospitals. Forty-four percent of the cases tracked by inspectors involved preventable health care problems, the report said."

SLT Health Consulting:"SLT Health Consulting was founded on the values and principles my parents taught me, and these values compel me to treat all with respect and dignity. I have been an RN for more than 20 years, caring for patients at the "bedside" of the world renowned Shock Trauma (UMMC), Johns Hopkins Medical Centers, Long Term Care Centers, Medical-Surgical floors, Managed Care Organizations and Homeless Shelters. I know that finding the right nurses to care for the sick is a challenging, daunting task which requires a unique recruitment skill set. In 2006, my mother suffered a debilitating stroke and required 24/7 care, and was placed in a multi specialty center that was able to provide her care. As excellent as the center was in providing care for my mother, our family still longed to have her home with us. But, unfortunately my mother passed on without ever coming back home."

Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: My biggest fear is that nursing will not continue to attract "the next generation". Reports say that the current generation is seeking jobs with more autonomy, flexibility, and better pay. Nursing requires dedication, and often involves odd shifts, heavy workloads, and less than optimal pay scales. I hope and pray the profession realizes the future is now, and continues to address the issues and work on them in the interest of future healthcare.

When Disclosure Is Dangerous: Remembering Cicely Bolden, By Erin Seatter, From Positive Women's Network BC, October 10, 2012:"Cicely Bolden is a name I won't soon forget. Hospital Falls Are Not Always the Healthcare Provider's Fault, Or Are They? by Amanda Trujillo, MSN, RN:"In April of 2005 Mr. William Delk was a patient at Reid Hospital in Indiana when he fell while seated on a rolling commode in the bathroom. Mr. Delk had recently been a victim of a stroke that left him with complete left sided hemiparesis. He had been readmitted with complications associated with the stroke that were described as "a headache and numbness on the left side of his body." More Kids Taking Antipsychotics for ADHD: Study, Healthday:"Use of powerful antipsychotic medications such as Abilify and Risperdal to control youngsters with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other behavior problems has skyrocketed in recent years, a new study finds. Antipsychotics are approved to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, other serious mental problems and irritability related to autism. But they don't have U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for ADHD or other childhood behavior problems, and their use for this purpose is considered "off label." Obesity in Nurses Linked to 'Adverse Work Schedules' Released: 8/3/2012:"For nurses who work long hours or other "adverse work schedules," the risk of obesity is related to lack of opportunity for exercise and sleep, suggests a study in the August issue of Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM). Alison M. Trinkoff, ScD, RN, and colleagues of University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, analyzed data on more than 1,700 female nurses. The study focused on factors related to obesity in nurses with "adverse work schedules"— long hours, high work burden, required on-call/overtime, and/or lack of rest. Obesity-related factors were compared for approximately 700 nurses meeting these criteria versus 1,000 nurses with more favorable work schedules. About 55 percent of nurses in both groups were overweight or obese."

Nurses and Anti-Vaccination, Posted on June 4, 2012:"As a health care provider I consider it my professional duty to stay current on recommended vaccinations, including the annual flu vaccine. I have the option of receiving it at my work site (limited times/places so not very convenient) or at my doctor's office, or—as I usually opt for—at my local Safeway pharmacy. My annual flu shot comes between shopping for groceries, is immediately covered in full by my health insurance, and is administered by a very friendly and knowledgeable pharmacist within about five minutes of registering for it. (I fully realize all of these lack of barriers/facilitators do not exist for everyone). I have read the evidence on risks and benefits of the annual flu vaccine and am convinced on the side of getting the shot. I listen respectfully to my nurse colleagues who opt out of the flu vaccine, but I am dismayed by how many opt out for anything other than religious or valid medical reasons. I haven't tried to convince them to change their minds because I never saw that as my job. But if any of them happen to be reading this, I hope they will at least reconsider their decision."

Monday Mommy Health Series: Skin Cancer - Melanoma, Monday, June 4, 2012:"The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends self-exams monthly. If you do these regularly, you are more likely to spot any abnormalities or changes in moles. After you do it a few times, it should take no more than 10 minutes – a small investment in what could be a life-saving routine. It's also great for your children to see you do this, so they incorporate it into their lives as they get older. You may find it helpful to have a doctor do a full-body exam first, to assure you that any existing spots, freckles, or moles are normal or treat any that may not be."

Hospice being marketed as a cost-cutter for hospitals, USAToday, #nurseup #nursefriendly #hospice #eolchat:"By Kelly Kennedy, USA TODAY:"Hospice marketers, exploring possibilities for new revenue to help continue the industry's remarkable growth, are looking to exploit a provision in the 2010 health care law by persuading hospitals to send Medicare patients into end-of-life hospice care instead of readmitting them to the hospital. Such a move, the hospice marketers say, will enable hospitals to avoid paying the Medicare penalties required by the new law when hospitals discharge patients and then have to readmit them within 30 days: Instead of readmitting the patients, hospitals should send them to hospice care, which also is covered by Medicare, according to a USA TODAY analysis of marketing materials. Patients with severe heart problems and pneumonia tend to decline quickly and often move in and out of hospitals, said hospice marketing specialist Rich Chesney, who proposed the idea."

What is Nurse-to-Nurse Hostility? Kathleen Bartholomew, RN, MN #nurseup #nursefriendly:"It is the persistent downgrading experienced from your peer(s) that eventually undermines your confidence and self esteem. Nurse-to-nurse hostility prevents us from coming together to face our current challenges and threatens our profession on every level."

Christian Nursing Home Fires Nurse After Learning She Is HIV-Positive, By Dan Fastenberg, May 22nd 2012, #nurseup #nursefriendly:"According to the lawsuit, the hospital fired the woman because administrators didn't believe that she could perform "the essential function of administering medications" because of her HIV-positive status. The Centers for Disease Control says the HIV virus is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids or damaged tissue of an infected person, most commonly through sexual intercourse or the sharing of needles. After the outbreak of the AIDS virus in the 1980s, those Americans with the virus were eventually granted protected status as part of the 1990 Americans With Disabilities Act. As a result, Americans with the disease must be given equal opportunity in public accommodations, transportation and employment. As long as the virus does not prevent the worker from carrying out the duties of his or her job, then the employer cannot fire someone simply because they have the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS, says Katharine W. Kores, district director of the EEOC's Memphis District Office."

Judge: PBSO deputies violated nurses' rights by demanding blood tests in suspected DUI cases, By Jane Musgrave, May 20, 2012:"Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies have been violating the constitutional rights of nurses by threatening them with arrest if the hospital workers didn't draw blood from suspected drunken drivers, a federal magistrate has ruled. In a case involving a nurse at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Riviera Beach, Magistrate James Hopkins said Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and any "officer of reasonable competence" should have realized they can't put a medical professional in handcuffs for refusing to conduct a blood test. "The Sheriff's Department knew or should have known implementation of the policy would inevitably lead to violations of the Fourth Amendment for false arrest," Hopkins wrote in a 27-page opinion this month. The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit VA nurse Marjorie DePalis-Lachaud filed last spring against the agency, two years after she was put in handcuffs and forced to sit in a patrol car after she explained to deputy Kenneth Noel that hospital policy prevented her from drawing blood without a doctor's order."

Texas Nurses Association Establishes Legal Defense Fund, To Support Nurses Indicted for Being Patient Advocates:"In Winkler County, a small West Texas county adjacent to the southeast corner of New Mexico, two registered nurses are facing criminal indictments because they wanted to advocate for their patients. The felony charge: misuse of official information. Under the Texas Penal Code, misuse of information is a third-degree felony that carries the potential for two-to-ten years' imprisonment and upwards of a $10,000 fine. It's a pretty serious situation. Texas Nurses Association recently learned of the accusation that the two nurses – both TNA members – reported a physician at their hospital – a county hospital – to the Texas Medical Board because they had concern that the physician's practice was below the acceptable standard of care. The nurses were soon thereafter terminated by their hospital employer. And, the physician had also filed a harassment complaint against them with the county sheriff's department. The criminal charges according to a television news broadcast by KWES NewsWest 9 in Midland, Odessa, Big Spring, were because the nurses "sent patient files to the state medical board in an attempt to harm one of the hospital's physicians." Because the two nurses, Vicki Galle, RN and Anne Mitchell, RN, worked for a county hospital – and included medical record numbers of the patients in their report (actually, no patient names were disclosed) – they were charged with the felony crime of misuse of official information. Even though the Texas Medical Board stated in a letter to Winkler County attorneys that disclosing of patient identification numbers is allowed under state and federal law, the nurses must still defend themselves against the criminal charge. And, they are without their jobs."

NY nurse threatened, forced to assist in late-term abortion, ADF attorneys file lawsuit against hospital for violating Christian nurse's rights of conscience:"Alliance Defense Fund attorneys filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Mount Sinai Hospital on behalf of a Catholic nurse who was forced to participate in a late-term abortion under the threat of disciplinary action, including possible termination and loss of her license. The hospital has known of her religious objections to abortion since 2004. Hospital administrators told the nurse that the scheduled abortion was an "emergency," though evidence shows otherwise, and insisted moments before the procedure that she assist doctors despite her repeated objections to the procedure, which dismembered a preborn child in the 22nd week of gestation. By federal law, hospitals that receive federal funds cannot force employees to participate in abortion procedures under any circumstances. "Pro-life nurses shouldn't be forced to assist in abortions against their beliefs," said ADF Legal Counsel Matt Bowman. "Requiring a devout, Catholic nurse to participate in a late-term abortion in order to remain employed is illegal, unethical, and violates her rights of conscience. Federal law requires that employers who receive funding from tax dollars must not compel employees to violate their sincerely held religious beliefs, but this nurse's objections fell on deaf ears."

Nurses: Insuring Your Legal Protection, Posted on October 31, 2011, The Health Law Firm:"Though many nurses pursue a career in nursing hoping that they will never face disciplinary charges, any number of events not in a nurse's control can lead to an investigation or administrative action. Nurses need to make sure they are covered if this ever occurs, with appropriate insurance. The primary reason that a nurse should purchase a professional liability insurance policy is that this type of insurance usually includes coverage for legal defense of licensing and disciplinary action commenced against a nurse. License defense coverage pays the legal fees and costs associated with defending a nurse when an investigation is initiated that may result in action against her nursing license or disciplinary action against the nurse. Coverage is usually available from the time the nurse receives written notice that an investigation by a state agency has been initiated. It will also cover formal complaints made against the nurse, informal hearings before the Board of Nursing, and formal administrative hearings before an administrative law judge."

National Nurses Week Isn't All About Ice Cream Socials, May 10th, 2012 By Jennifer Olin, BSN, RN:"When we were planning our coverage for Nurses Week here at RNCentral my editor asked if there was anything new on the Amanda Trujillo front we could include. My first reaction was, "not really." Then I got to thinking. National Nurses Week isn't all about ice cream socials and coffee mugs. While it is a week to talk about whom we are and what we want for the future of nursing it is also a time, I think, to talk about some of the darker aspects of this career choice and where we go with those issues. Nurses should be recognized for all they do for their patients, their facilities, and their community. It is great to be appreciated. I think during this week of focusing on advocacy, leading, and caring we should also look at nurses who believe they are doing the right thing but get called on the carpet."

After Questions on Tactics, Accretive (Health) Cuts Forecast, By JESSICA SILVER-GREENBERG, Published: May 9, 2012, #nurseup:"Last month, the company said in a statement that Ms. Swanson's allegations were filled with "inaccuracies, innuendo and unfounded speculation" and that the "very serious allegation of denying access to patient care is flatly untrue." It has asked that the lawsuit be dismissed, court documents show. Pete Stark, a Democrat who is the highest ranking member of the House subcommittee that oversees Medicare and other health services, has called for government health officials to investigate Accretive's practices. On Wednesday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, prompted by the accusations, sent letters to the largest hospital associations, including the American Hospital Association, urging them to bar any debt-collection practices that might violate the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. "We would have serious concerns with the legality of any hospital policy or procedure that may discourage individuals from seeking care, such as demanding that emergency department patients pay before receiving treatment," the letters said."

Corruption of the medical literature is impossible to prevent by Bradley Evans, MD #nurseup #healthcare #nursefriendly:"This article argues that there can be no certainty that information is unbiased, fair and accurate, because the individual physician will not be able to detect two common deceptions. The first is to omit key facts deliberately. The doctor won't know what was left out. You can't know what you aren't told. One example of that is Bombardier et al.'s rofecoxib (Vioxx) study published in the NEJM. Merck and its ghostwriters left out the fact that some patients had had heart attacks. When the editors looked at the CD containing the article, they found it was in Microsoft Word, which contains prior versions, as well as the finished article. Prior versions showed that the sentence mentioning the heart attacks had been deleted. Now, pharmaceutical companies and their ghostwriters are smart enough to send articles without including prior versions, so that discovery of this deception, which was embarrassing and costly for Merck, will not occur again. While the first deception assumes the person transmitting information is corrupt, the second assumes that the data are corrupt. The person transmitting the information may be above reproach. How can this happen? It can occur several ways: (1) Negative studies can be discarded, with only the positive ones published; (2) Studies can be done with comparison to placebo, not to best known treatment; (3) Studies can be ghostwritten by companies paid by the study sponsor; (4) Editors can be biased by ad revenue from drug companies, the main revenue source for most journals; and (5) An editor may be a paid investigator for drug company. This is probably not an exhaustive list."

Fairview boss apologizes for criticized billing tactics, Accretive Health, #nurseup #nursefriendly #healthcare:"In a report this week, Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson detailed how Fairview workers and consultants from Accretive Health Inc. employed what she called overly aggressive tactics to get patients to pay their medical bills. On Friday, April 27, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., wrote to the Chicago-based consulting firm seeking responses by next week to a list of questions. Meanwhile, Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., has called for a federal probe of Accretive, which has seen its stock price fall by about half since Swanson's report. Friday night, Fairview officials said they told Accretive they plan to terminate their last remaining contract - an agreement in which Accretive consulted on certain Fairview contracts with health insurance companies. "These alleged activities included demanding that patients pay for services before and during treatment, particularly targeting pregnant women," Franken wrote in his letter. "The report also alleged that Accretive provided a broad range of its employees, including debt collection agents, with full access to Fairview patients' detailed medical records."

Accretive Health fires back against allegations, #nurseup #healthcare #nursefriendly:"Until last week, the Chicago-based company was a consultant to the Minneapolis-based Fairview health system, but the relationship has fallen apart amid public scrutiny with a sweeping report released by Swanson that alleged overly aggressive collection tactics. Meanwhile, Fairview said Monday, April 30, that it recently stopped trying to collect on patients' old debts during emergency room visits for new medical problems - a practice that Swanson criticized. Fairview's chief executive officer, Mark Eustis, mentioned the change in an employee email Friday. The email also disclosed that the sons of both Eustis and Dr. Dave Moen - the president of Fairview Physician Associates - are employed by Accretive Health."

Nurse said whistle-blowing led to firing, Lawsuit alleges Mercy's birth center critically understaffed, By Dale Rodebaugh, Monday, April 30, 2012:"A veteran registered nurse at Mercy Regional Medical Center has sued the hospital, alleging she was fired for repeatedly expressing concern about understaffing and poor morale in the Family Birth Center. Deborah Patterson, who worked at the hospital from August 1988 to September 2011, wants her job back. She also asks for benefits she failed to receive, monetary compensation for mental anguish – the amount to be determined by a jury – and legal fees. Patterson also wants a judgment saying the defendants violated a state law forbidding retaliation against registered health-care workers for expressing concern about patient safety and quality of care."

"I discovered that they had a very big misunderstanding about what they were about to participate in," Trujillo told CBS 5 News. Trujillo, a licensed nurse in Arizona since 2006, said she advised the patient of possible complications. The patient decided to delay the surgery and reconsider his or her options. Trujillo said she also ordered a case management consult for the patient to be educated about hospice care. "The doctor, ultimately, is the focal point that directs care for patients," said Banner spokesman Bill Byron, who said company policy prevents nurses from ordering a case management consult."

how many nurses have had lost there license because of the board of nursing, Topix.com:"I went with a friend to the board of nursing and i was just shocked that most nurses didnt have an representation but nursing board had a lawyer there. But most nurses didnt know that this lawyer was not there to help them but to throw them under the bus and make them jump through hoops to get there license back . This angers me and i would like to start a union for nurses and make sure this doesnt happen to no more good nurse or doctors and the board of nursing will have to pay with a class action law suit and if alot of nurses and doctors have been wrongfully accussed without representation then we will have a good case and a good shot at making a difference i know that nurses jobs are very hard jobs to follow and very hard to quit after you have been doing this job for months and years after education and work experience, lets make a change for a diffence message me and lets get this started"

Healthcare for People Not for Profit: Transplants and Amanda Trujillo, Center for Health, Media & Policy, April 4, 2012:"Organ transplantation is a complex and challenging undertaking for both the patient and providers. It can offer the appropriate patient opportunities for greatly improved quality and length of life and it can also offer an opportunity for profiteering and conflicted behaviors. As outlined below, transplantation produces significant revenue dollars, even for a "non-profit" hospital. Estimated U.S. Average 2011 Billed Charges Per Transplant: Heart Only - $997,700 Liver – $577,100 Kidney – $262,900 Nurse Amanda Trujillo identified that a patient she cared for at Banner Del E Webb Medical Center of Arizona lacked full information about what a transplant evaluation and post-transplant self-care entailed. She says she referred the patient for a hospice case management consultation. She was then fired for overstepping her scope of practice. Arizona's scope of practice for nurses clearly dictates a nurse's role to promote the client's best interest."

Hospitals Aren't Hotels, By Theresa Brown, RN, Published: March 14, 2012:"The problem with this metric is that a lot of hospital care is, like pleurodesis, invasive, painful and even dehumanizing. Surgery leaves incisional pain as well as internal hurts from the removal of a gallbladder or tumor, or the repair of a broken bone. Chemotherapy weakens the immune system. We might like to say it shouldn't be, but physical pain, and its concomitant emotional suffering, tend to be inseparable from standard care. What's more, recent research suggests that judging care in terms of desirable customer experiences could be expensive and may even be dangerous. A new paper by Joshua Fenton, an assistant professor at the University of California, Davis, and colleagues found that higher satisfaction scores correlated with greater use of hospital services (driving up costs), but also with increased mortality."

Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: Nursing is a culture of the oppressed, nurses need to join hands and claim their right to be partners in healthcare. Healthcare is becomig more and more fragmented, we do not provide total care, fail to address important psycho, social, emotional and spiitual issues that affect a person's ability to make informed and wise decisions. It also hinders a patients ability to recoup, because the stress of unmet need decreases their bodys' ability to repond positively to treatment

Nurses face rising tide of violence; It's now a felony to assault a nurse, Sunday, November 27, 2011, Lauren Auty, RN, BSN, MJ:" "Call Security!" is a phrase that is too often yelled across a busy Emergency Room. It's a disruptive moment for any staff nurse, patient or family member who is involved. Violence in Emergency Departments is a hot topic due to the rising frequency of occurrences nationally. Everyone knows that you don't touch a cop or any 'man in uniform.' Even mouthing off to a cop will get you in trouble. That should never change. As a new mother, I am a believer in instilling a little fear along with manners. I don't want to have a "punk" for a child. Some people just missed these lessons growing up and everyone from the McDonalds server to nurses are paying for it. As an ER nurse for most of my career, I have become almost desensitized to the reality that violence in our workplace is becoming more frequent and just as common in the suburban hospitals as those in major cities. The explicatives mother f****w**** or bitch, or f-this and f-that are common language in an Emergency Room. As the nurse this language is directed at, you learn to walk away and control the patient with methods supported by your hospital."

The Nurse: The Swiss Army Knife of Healthcare, by carol-gino on February 5, 2012:"Okay so, after reading a ton of books trying to find a definition of nursing that matched my experience, I fell asleep with no clear cut answer to my question, "What is a nurse?" I mean it's not that I haven't been pondering that for a very long time, it's just that nothing so far has satisfied me. I've seen brilliant bedside nurses–and I don't mean nurses who only cared for patients with superb care and compassion– I mean smart, really smart diagnosticians. Nurses who doctors asked, "What do you think is going on with this patient?" And when they answered, there was true appreciation and respect from the doctor to that nurse. They were colleagues, no question there. I've seen ICU nurses, who both doctors and patients trusted to look at a monitor, administer meds — both stat and with standing orders — who saved patients lives time and time again, before a doctor ever could get to the Unit.

#NurseUp and Educate On!! Support Each Other! ER Nurses Care, Thursday, February 2, 2012:"Nurses all over the US are upset and simply can't understand how on earth a nurse could be fired for being a patient advocate, educating her patient on all aspects of their care and explaining in detail treatment plans, which led to a greater understanding by her patient and subsequent change in plans. Amanda Trujillo is an advocate for her patients, she did what we all do every shift that we work, make sure our patients understand what is wrong with them, the plan of care, which includes educating them on any treatments, procedures, medications, surgeries, activities or anything else the patient or family asks of us. http://ernursescare.blogspot.com/2012/02/nurseup-and-educate-on-support-each.html

Tsunami: A Conversation with Amanda Trujillo (Part 3 of 3), by Nursetopia on February 2, 2012:"Amanda nailed this situation during our call when she said, "This is bigger than me." She explained her actions – reaching out to colleagues via emails and social media – is not about revenge or getting even with any organization. She understands the Arizona Board of Nursing must investigate her because she was reported, however, the reason she was reported – a case management consult construed as a medical order – is the bothersome part. "We all make mistakes, realize them, use them to change, give thanks for them, and move on. If I had done something wrong, I could take it. If I had done something wrong." Amanda's story is a ripple culminating in a tsunami of change and ideas and discussions. When asked what she'd like other nurses to know, she provided three thoughts:" http://nursetopia.net/2012/02/02/tsunami-a-conversation-with-amanda-trujillo-part-3-of-3/

A Letter From the Arizona Nurses Association, 1 Feb, 2012, Author: Mother Jones, RN:"I wrote a letter to the Arizona Nurses Association when I learned that the association was not coming to the aid of Amanda Trujillo. If you haven't heard, Amanda was fired from Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center after she educated one of her patients about their upcoming liver transplant. I wrote about it here and here. I couldn't understand why the association was twiddling its thumbs until I learned that Teri Hill, the president of AzNA is also the Director of Professional Practice at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center."

Waves: A Conversation with Amanda Trujillo (Part 2 of 3), by Nursetopia on February 1, 2012:"Nurses throughout the U.S. and Canada are standing beside Amanda Trujillo, RN, MSN. We're talking about this everywhere – in blogs, social media, our offices, you name it. Admittedly, Amanda is a shy person; she's not accustomed to this attention. Yet, she says, "For the first time, I feel safe; for the first time, I don't feel alone." Why does Amanda's story resonate with so many of us? Because the majority of us have faced a sliver of Amanda's story. We've each felt alone in our careers – in certain situations – at one point or another, and we don't think anyone should have to do that. Despite what most believe, there is a strong cohort of nurses who don't eat our profession's young; rather, we take them under our wings and mentor them. It's unfortunate so many nurses do not get to see this amazing group of nurses because they typically find one another, encourage one another, and make their organizations great. The same is true for the bullies – those nurses that really should never provide care for people because they are constantly tearing down everyone they meet. They find one another, too, creating hostile and toxic environments, driving nurses away from the profession and making them think they are failures."

An Update on AZ Nurse Amanda Trujillo Case, Submitted by Mech on Wednesday, 1 February 2012:"Amanda Trujillo, a registered nurse in Arizona, has been scuffling with her case on patient advocacy for several months already. On January 24, 2012, her case was supposedly to be heard. But unfortunately, it has been postponed and rescheduled on March. And what is reason for delaying it? The AZ BON don't like Amanda's online activity and feel she threatened a former boss. Thus, they are requiring her to undergo first a psychiatric evaluation. With the popularity that Amanda Trujillo's case is receiving online, it made me realized then how important social media is in healthcare industry. They are not only beneficial in promoting health awareness but also allow people in nursing scrubs to share their experiences. Additionally, social media makes it possible for nurses to extend their support to fellow professionals in nursing scrubs like AZ nurse Amanda Trujillo who is currently in a dilemma.

Ripples: A Conversation with Amanda Trujillo (Part 1 of 3), by Nursetopia on January 31, 2012:"I know there are people who have read and read and read about Amanda Trujillo. In fact, there are so many great posts, I don't know who to link to so you can see them all. Be sure to check out The Nerdy Nurse, Those Emergency Blues, Emergiblog, Nurse Ratched's Place, and Vern Dutton's page. There are a plethora of links between those fabulous blogs. Still, there are many who have no idea what is happening in Arizona. You can read Amanda's story in her own words; please, do. I spoke with Amanda via telephone for over an hour, listening to her tell her story and asking questions. The many subsequent posts are for Amanda as well as inspired by her. I thank her for sharing her time and story with me so I can share it with you in hopes you will share it with others. This must stop."

Amanda Trujillo – Nurse fired for being a patient advocate, Pat Iyer, January 30, 2012:"The story of Amanda Trujillo is a horrifying one. Briefly, she is a single mom who fought to get off welfare and fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse. Not only did she become a nurse, she earned a masters degree in nursing. One night while working a Banner Health in Arizona, she took care of a patient who was being asked to undergo a liver transplant. In talking to the patient, Amanda learned that the patient did not fully understand what was going to occur. Amanda educated the patient. She explained the option of hospice instead. The patient decided against the transplant. Then the physician came in, had a well- witnessed tantrum at the hospital when he found out his patient had decided against surgery, and Amanda was fired by the hospital. Her case came up for review by the Arizona Board of Nursing. The summary of her case written by the attorney representing her is below. Amanda has been devastated in terms of her career and her finances. She is back on welfare, her dream of being a nurse shattered."

Banner Health, Arizona Board of @Nursing: A Personal Vendetta? Emergiblog:"Sorry, no. This is the problem. There is a huge injustice being perpetrated against a nurse right this moment. It's getting worse. And the ones who got the party started aren't happy that it isn't quiet. That their moves, and their motives, are under public scrutiny. That nurses are talking. Because if you are quiet, it means they've got you frightened. If you are quiet, it's harder for the next nurse to speak out. If you are quiet, it is easier to intimidate and retaliate against nurses with impunity. I received a call from the Arizona Board of Nursing this morning. I am not able to obtain a copy of the Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center complaint against Amanda Trujillo, RN, MSN."

Arizona Nurse Has License Threatened By Doctor After Providing Patient Education January 22, 2012 By The Nerdy Nurse:"There are times in my nursing career when I am so very proud of how far we have come in advancing our profession. Unfortunately, there are also times where I am reminded that this is still very much an uphill climb we must make in order to legitimately participate in truly collaborative healthcare. Today is one of those days in which I am reminded we still have battles to win. The following blog post is related to an email that was originally sent to @EchoHeronAuthor. It was then posted on Vernon Dutton's Posterous, Amanda Trujillo case will go before the Arizona State Board of Nursing on January 24th, 2012. Her story is one of an archaic medical model in which the doctor's word is supreme and we are all just nurse maids here to do their bidding. This is an indication that there are many who do not wish to continue to advance toward collaborative healthcare in which we work as a team to provide patients with the best care possible. This is also an example of persons who may not be in medicine for the right reasons."

Age Discrimination Takes Its Toll by Paula Span, January 12, 2012, 12:07 pm:"Raise your hand if you've felt that people treat you with less respect or courtesy than others, that they act as if you're not smart, that you get poorer service in stores and restaurants than others — in short, if you've felt discriminated against because of age, gender, ethnicity, income, disability, appearance, even marital status. A startling proportion of older people report that they've experienced discrimination: 63 percent, in a study recently published in Research on Aging. The most commonly cited cause? "Thirty percent report being mistreated because of their age," said the lead author Ye Luo, a Clemson University sociologist. Perceived discrimination because of gender, race or ancestry, disabilities or appearance followed in smaller proportion"

"Would You Recommend Nursing" by Annette Tersigni RN, The Yoga Nurse:"Nursing is a calling. I am a non-traditional nurse and I recommend non-traditional nursing. I was called when I was 48 years young and graduated at 51. The smartest move I ever made in my life. Becoming a nurse was not what I expected though. The 'eating your young thing.' Yikes! I was and am still a yoga teacher, all about 'expanding consciousness' loving kindness, compassion. Sadly I found that the nurses I first worked with at a big 'law dee da' famous hospital were less than supportive. Then I moved to a small town in North Carolina with a 140-bed hospital. It all changed. The nurses there were awesome and helped me to become a competent cardiac nurse."

Reducing Medication Errors: A Focus on the Med Pass, Capra Dalton RN, CEO, Pedagogy Incorporated:"Recent studies have shed light on the growing problem of medication errors within our healthcare system. It is important that all healthcare providers be familiar with the extent of the problem, both the high error rates and the potentially serious consequences. This knowledge is needed to facilitate active participation in implementing effective strategies and changes in attitudes to decrease these error rates. Errors are in effect a breakdown of a system and not the sole responsibility of any one individual. Designed for the licensed nurse and certified medication aide, this course will provide information on the scope of problem, the cause and the prevention of medication errors. With a focus on the current best practices of medication preparation and administration this course will enhance understanding of the survey process and remedies the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) may enforce. The goal is to reduce facility medication error rates in order to provide safe medication administration to residents."

Lab Tests Online, American Association for Clinical Chemistry:"The work of the clinical laboratory professional - who analyzes many things in the body including chemical indicators, the health of blood cells, and the presence of microbes and genetic markers - has long been an unseen aspect of health care. Yet, clinical lab tests often provide the link between the patient's presentation of symptoms and the doctor's diagnosis of and prescribed treatment for a particular condition or disease. Through preventive screening, lab tests also aid in the early detection of potentially fatal conditions and, in so doing, lead to early treatment. In short, lab tests can help both to save lives and to improve the quality of life.
Lab Tests Online has been designed to help you, as a patient or family caregiver, to better understand the many clinical lab tests that are part of routine care as well as diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of conditions and diseases. If you are a medical professional, this site can serve as a quick reference tool or as a resource for keeping up with advances in laboratory science. Lynette Damir, RN, CEO and Creative Director, SwaddleDesigns Lynette Damir, RN, CEO and Creative Director, founded SwaddleDesigns in 2002. The inspiration for SwaddleDesigns was sparked when Lynette visited families with new babies in their homes and she noticed they struggled with swaddling for two reasons. First, the blanket they were using was too small or too thick, and second, they could not remember how to make a good secure swaddle. The parents consistently asked her to share the secret of the hospital nurses - how to swaddle."

Study: Many parents of fat kids in denial - Health - Childrens health - msnbc.com:"A survey found that many Americans whose children are obese do not see them that way.

That is worrisome because obese children run the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol problems and other ailments more commonly found in adults. And overweight children are likely to grow up to be overweight adults.

"It suggests to me that parents of younger kids believe that their children will grow out of their obesity, or something will change at older ages," said Dr. Matthew M. Davis, a University of Michigan professor of pediatrics and internal medicine who led the study, released earlier this month.

"When I see a child that is obese at these younger ages, I take that as a sign of ways nutrition can be improved, a child's activity level can be improved."

Chemo Brain | 12 Ways to Help Someone with Chemo Brain | Caring.com:"The chemicals used in chemotherapy are powerful -- strong enough to kill cancer cells. That's a good thing, but they also seem to have a little-understood effect on the brain, causing cognitive problems such as memory lapses and loss of concentration. While it's tempting to think that these problems are all in the patient's mind, they're all too real, experts say. In fact, a study at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that more than 80 percent of people who receive chemotherapy for cancer report annoying memory and concentration problems that often linger for months, even after treatment is finished."

Fracture, Medicinenet.com:"Bone fracture, broken bone, bone crack all mean he same thing. The bone has been damaged such that. None of these terms indicate the severity of the bone damage. Bones are the body's storage place for calcium. Under hormone control, calcium content of bone is constantly increasing or decreasing. Bones break when they cannot withstand a force or trauma applied to them. Sometimes the bones are so weak that force may be just gravity, like compression fractures of the back in the elderly."

Florida hospitals stuck with long-term, costly ventilator care - St. Petersburg Times:" Larry Brazil was a patient at University Community Hospital for almost three years. Tameka Campbell was at Tampa General Hospital for five years. Together, they had bills of nearly $11 million that no private or public insurance plan will cover. That pricey care did not cure them; it kept them breathing on ventilator machines. Brazil and Campbell could have been cared for at a fraction of the cost — if Florida had the right kind of nursing facilities. State records indicate that fewer than two dozen nursing homes — including three in the Tampa Bay area — out of about 700 statewide care for ventilator patients. But some only care for children or patients who can likely be weaned off the machines. Only a handful take new patients, and their ranks are dwindling."

Medicare Prepares Rule To Penalize Hospitals With High Readmission Rates - Kaiser Health News:"When hospitals discharge patients, they typically see their job as done. But soon, they could be on the hook for what happens after Medicare patients leave the premises, and particularly if they are readmitted within a month. In an effort to save money and improve care, Medicare, the federal program for the elderly and disabled, is about to release a final rule aimed at getting hospitals to pay more attention to patients after discharge. A key component of the new approach is to cut back payments to hospitals where high numbers of patients are readmitted, prodding hospitals to make sure patients see their doctors and fill their prescriptions."

Amber Keinath, Registered Nurse and Health Coach:"Amber is a Registered Nurse and Health Coach who is very passionate about educating and inspiring women to be healthy for life. She started her nursing career working in the medical, postpartum & newborn, and pediatric specialties in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Amber continued her education by completing her Master's Degree in Nursing with an emphasis in Wellness Promotion and becoming certified as a Health Coach. From Hospital Nurse to Health Coach: During Amber's nursing career, she began to question her ability to help people in the hospital. She witnessed many people get discharged from the hospital with more medications only to wind up readmitted a few days later. People were not getting healthier despite all the care provided. She felt there was a better way to help these people."

Rita Batchley @thenursesnurse:"The Nurses Nurse is the pen name for Rita Batchley, an RN, and healthcare activist who wants you to be aware of the healthcare injustices that are occurring everyday, and the real-life role registered nurses play to save you from disaster. After reading her novel, Labor Pains, you will understand the truth behind insurance companies and what you can do about it. People trust that RNs care. For the seventh year in a row, the Gallop poll ranked nurses highest as the most trusted profession. Now,with the advent of healthcare reform, nurses will have even greater challenges seeing that patients get the kind of treatment they need, as well as protection from serious harm. Remember: A doctor will admit you to the hospital but it's the nurse who will make sure you get to go home."

The Skin Cancer Foundation - American Academy of Pediatrics Calls for Ban on Youth Tanning:"Tanning The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a group of 60,000 pediatricians, today called for all US tanning salons to bar minors. With this new policy statement, the AAP joins health groups such as the American Medical Association, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Academy of Dermatology, and The Skin Cancer Foundation in demanding a ban on indoor tanning for young people.
We strongly commend the AAP for this definitive statement pushing for prohibition of indoor tanning for young people," said Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. "The damage caused by the UV radiation from tanning beds and the sun is cumulative and often irreversible, and the earlier people start to tan, the higher their risk of developing skin cancer in their lifetimes."

Support needed to help nurses tackle substance abuse, Vanderbilt University:"An estimated 10 percent to 20 percent of nurses and nursing students in the United States may have substance abuse, misuse, dependency or addiction problems. The key to tackling this difficult issue — and protecting public safety — is support and treatment rather than punishment, according to a recent paper in the Journal of Clinical Nursing by Todd Monroe, a post-doctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, and colleagues at the University of Tennessee. "Doctors and nurses are only human and face the same problems as everyone else, which can include chemical dependency," said Monroe."

Gillian Ehrlich, RN, 2009-2010 Winners, Nurses' Educational Funds, Inc.:"Gillian Ehrlich's mission is to make holistic health our common ground in medicine and improve universal access to primary care. This vision of health evolved over a decade spent working mainly with non-profit organizations in direct-service level positions. Beginning with the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School and other wilderness programs, she shared with adolescents the elements required for healthy living: food, shelter, community, exercise, purpose and competency, joy and fresh air. Onto this foundation, she added a season of growing organic food for 25 families in southwest Ohio and functioning as a teacher and domestic violence counselor on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in Lake Andes, South Dakota. Health has been the consistent thread and nursing became the venue for the life-long application of these skills and values. Gillian graduated with a BA/BS degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington and a BSN from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She balances her understanding of allopathic medicine with 1000+ hours of Ayurvedic training with Dr. Vasant Lad in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Pune, India. She emerged with sound convictions that health and contentment are possible for each of us, that authentic relationships and a clean environment account for much of this, and that we start healing from whatever shoes in which we currently stand. Gillian currently works as an RN at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington and is studying towards a Doctorate of Nursing Practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Washington. Her focus is relationship-centered care, innovative health delivery systems and integrating complementary and alternative medicine into public health primary care."

How We Got Started, Sarah Cruz, RN, Little Boots Publishing, Rhode Island (RI) Nursing Entrepreneurs:"By some twist of fate, my nursing career has been taken into a new and exciting direction...writing and illustrating storybooks for children. Three years ago our daughter became a burn injury statistic. She sustained a preventable second-degree burn to her hand just a few days before her first birthday that has since healed. Each year too many children are severely burned by various kitchen appliances or by hot foods prepared in the kitchen. The United States has one of the highest rates of burn injury with the peak incidence occurring among children 1 to 5 years of age."

PT Perspective: Heart Disease in Women - Overshadowed and Understated, By: Son Trinh, DPT, Putmebacktogether.com:"It's good to be informed. As PTs, I'd add that it's our responsibility to inform ourselves then to pass on the information to patients. I've come across many women, patients, and co-workers who recognize the dangers of breast cancer and the necessity of research to cure it. Clearly, breast cancer is serious business and the stats are grim. The lifetime prevalence: 1 in 8; number of deaths per year: 40,000. But consider this. Lung cancer claims 70,000 women a year which is more than breast, ovarian and uterine cancers combined. Of those diagnosed with lung cancer, only 1 in 8 survives. The public consciousness seems misinformed on this."

Legal Consulting by Nurses, By Joy Collins, RN, BSBA, CLNC, LNCC, Wild Iris Medical Education, Inc.:"Nurses have been assisting attorneys with their medically related cases for far longer than is generally realized. It is only lately that the sub-specialty of legal nurse consulting has become a recognized field of nursing that the media has thrust into the mainstream. As far back as the 1980s (and probably earlier), nurses and other medical professionals were assisting the legal world to arrive at a fair settlement by moving through the quagmire of medical records and jargon that we nurses take for granted."

Do experienced nurses really eat their young? Scrubsmag.com:"I have lots and lots of opinions on this issue, having graduated a few years ago and having served as a preceptor to new RNs frequently. As a nurse, we should all strive to eradicate the adage about experienced nurses "eating their young" because we were all there at one point. Most hospitals have orientation periods for new graduates that concentrate on pairing the new nurse with more experienced nurses for days to months at a time before they are left to care for patients on their own. As a nurse alongside a new nurse- even if you are not directly precepting them- be sure to seek them out for unusual procedures that may be done on the floor so they can watch. This will only benefit the floor in the long run."

Health reform will bring need for more nurses in Oklahoma, December 2, 2010:"More Oklahomans could soon hear: "The nurse will see you now." The prescription for hospitals and doctors' offices, which will get even busier as health care reform brings millions more people to their doorsteps, may be highly trained nurses with greater authority. Those nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and be full partners with doctors as health care reform collides with an aging population and a reduction in primary care doctors, according to the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation."

Nurse Practitioner Business Owners blog, Barbara C. Phillips, MN, NP:"Nurse Practitioner Business Owners blog (NPBusiness.ORG) is an idea that was born out the need and frustration for Nurse Practitioners in private, independent practice to be able to connect, share resources, offer support, and learn from one another. It goes beyond that day to day support we give and receive from one another around our professional practice…this goes into the business of being a NP. NPs who have their own practices are breaking the mold for NPs in general as most are still in employed situations (out of preference or necessity). There are also NPs who have broken the "private practice mold" and are working in and outside areas of health care that are new and exciting. NPs have businesses in the educational field, legal field, insurance field, anti-aging field, retail and more."
