A plastic surgery nurse is a registered nurse who has had more experience in the surgical field. There are requirements to become a surgical nurse, just like any other specialty field. They are responsible for taking care of patients who have cosmetic surgery procedures done. They can work in hospitals or with plastic surgeons in their private offices. When plastic surgery procedures increase, so does the need for nurses. They are trained to watch over the patients, record medical information and use technology appropriately. Nursing Education Before a person can become a cosmetic surgery nurse, they must complete their education to become a registered nurse. Some registered nurses have two year associate degrees, but many have four year Bachelor's degrees. Once they have passed the necessary tests required to become registered nurses, they have the option of specializing in many different medical fields. Cosmetic Surgery Nurse Education It is important for a person to have had at least two years of experience in the surgical field before applying to become a cosmetic surgery nurse. There are courses available for registered nurses looking into going into the surgical field. They will learn how to take care of patients who have had burn treatment, liposuction, reconstructive surgery and other cosmetic surgery procedures. Nursing techniques and medical terminology will be taught as well. The American Society of Plastic Surgical Nurses is a nonprofit organization for surgical nurses that practices patient care, excellence and leadership to members of their society. They have awards for excellent nurses, job postings and other resources so that they can perform their job well. Responsibilities What makes a cosmetic surgery nurse different from a registered nurse is the training and patient care. Patients who have undergone plastic surgery or reconstructive surgery require more attention and different techniques. Many patients come in and have nose jobs, breast jobs, face lifts, liposuction and other cosmetic surgery procedures. Nurses are responsible for their protection, safety and maintenance of bandages and other after care procedures. They must be familiar with these techniques and any equipment used in the after care of the surgery.
