Submitted January 7, 2012Nursing is a calling. I am a non-traditional nurse and I recommend non-traditional nursing. I was called when I was 48 years young and graduated at 51. The smartest move I ever made in my life. Becoming a nurse was not what I expected though. The ‘eating your young thing.’ Yikes! I was and am still a yoga teacher, all about ‘expanding consciousness’ loving kindness, compassion. Sadly I found that the nurses I first worked with at a big ‘law dee da’ famous hospital were less than supportive. Then I moved to a small town in North Carolina with a 140-bed hospital. It all changed. The nurses there were awesome and helped me to become a competent cardiac nurse. Still there was the endless backbiting and gossip about other nurses. This was shocking to me because of my formation in spiritual practices, including a stint in a convent. Truth be told, when I hung out at the convent, I was also shocked that the nuns also gossiped about each other and that shattered my image on both accounts. The first nurses, it is said, were nuns. Hmmm. For me nursing was absolutely a stepping-stone to my vision of marrying nursing with my yoga teaching. I saw how nurses were self-care deprived, exhausted and stressed out. I wanted to help nurses with gentle practices that they could do on the job and in their personal life. Many nurses are too tired to ‘advocate’ for improved working conditions and have a feeling of hopelessness and that “nothing is gonna change” attitude. And you know what? They are right most of the time. I see and hear the same laments from nurses world wide. Nothing IS going to change until nurses change. Nurses can do anything. They get the job done, work shifts that other mere mortals would not consider for two minutes, with few breaks and little appreciation or recognition from administration. It is often why they leave the profession. It is not about the money, it is about not being seen nor heard. Nurses I SEE you, I HEAR you. And I have a dream, a dream that is becoming reality. My VISION: Nurses are the largest single group of health care workers. We rule health care. I see a day when more and more nurses become independent entrepreneurs and health care experts, educators, wellness coaches; thought leaders, change agents and online marketers of their wisdom in their specialty areas. I see a day when nurses finally have the ‘cojones’ to unite and stand for safer nurse to patient ratios and shorter more humane shifts with adequate breaks, lunch hours etc. like the rest of the civilized working world. Nurses are consistently voted the most trusted profession, year after year in the Gallop Pole. That is powerfully HUGE. It means that nurses who are burnt out from years at the bedside or community nursing have choices. The choice to take their wealth of life saving knowledge and step outside the ‘box’ and get the recognition they deserve, get a fulfilling life and get paid what they are worth. Do I recommend nursing? Oh yeah. Big time. And it is time for nurses to realize they have tons of options to make a difference in the world and they don’t have to serve a life sentence in the traditional nursing…if they choose not to. There is a NEW movement in nursing. I and many other nurse entrepreneurs of all ages are waking up. What about you?
