Florida hospitals stuck with long-term, costly ventilator care - St. Petersburg Times:" Larry Brazil was a patient at University Community Hospital for almost three years. Tameka Campbell was at Tampa General Hospital for five years.
Together, they had bills of nearly $11 million that no private or public insurance plan will cover. That pricey care did not cure them; it kept them breathing on ventilator machines.
Brazil and Campbell could have been cared for at a fraction of the cost — if Florida had the right kind of nursing facilities.
State records indicate that fewer than two dozen nursing homes — including three in the Tampa Bay area — out of about 700 statewide care for ventilator patients. But some only care for children or patients who can likely be weaned off the machines. Only a handful take new patients, and their ranks are dwindling." http://www.tampabay.com/news/health/article1186020.ece ****************************************************** ******************************************************
Adventist Health System (AHS):"Adventist Health System (AHS) is part of a tradition that began promoting the benefits of good health more than a century ago. In 1866, the Seventh-day Adventist Church opened its first healthcare center in Battle Creek, Michigan. It was a special place where scientific treatment of disease was combined with education in the prevention of disease--a tradition that continues in Adventist healthcare today. Around the world, the church operates more than 500 healthcare facilities dedicated to helping people achieve physical, mental and spiritual wholeness. These include approximately 160 hospitals in addition to nursing homes, dispensaries and clinics." ******************************************************

Charlotte Regional Medical Center:"Time travel. Think it's impossible? Well, maybe so. But just for a moment, imagine being the pilot of your very own time machine. Your first journey to the past takes you to the tiny, recently incorporated city of Punta Gorda, Fla., in the year 1887. Medical care is certainly not what we are used to in the new millennium. One doctor provides the entire city's health care. Still, the city is so tiny that the doctor must also operate a combined drugstore and tackle shop to make a profitable living"

Cleveland Clinic, Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units (CVICUs), Cleveland Clinic:"The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units (CVICUs) are under the direction of Jean-Pierre Yared, M.D., Anesthesiologist and Critical Care Physician. Additionaly, four Staff Anesthesiologists with Critical Care Certification provide daily clinical management in the CVICUs. There are a total of 55 CVICU beds which are divided into 5 manageable units. The CVICUs support over 13,000 patient days per year. Clinical management is co-primary with the Cardiovascular Surgeons. This collaborative structure enables the CVICU Staff to determine several aspects of patient management such as ventilatory support, sedation, nutrition and monitoring. CVICU Staff also play a key role in coordinating postoperative care between services. Staff provide follow-up on the regular nursing floor for patients with respiratory complications. Presently the CVICUs are staffed exclusively with physicians who have completed their Critical Care Training. Approximately 50 Respiratory Therapists work in the CVICUs and are directly supervised by the CVICU Staff. Fellowships are available." ******************************************************

Nurses' Station:"The idea for the Nurses' Station Catalog was conceived in 1989. After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. To be sure, there were several catalogs offering nurse's uniforms and a smattering of professional items. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."
