Healthline, Precautions, Bronchodilators:"Bronchodilators come with patient instructions. Be sure to carefully read them before using the medicine. If there is any confusion about how to use the medicine, check with the physician or pharmacist. Always use these medicines exactly as directed. Taking larger than recommended doses or using the medicine too often can lead to serious side effects and even death. If symptoms do not improve or if they get worse after using a bronchodilator, call a physician right away. Although some bronchodilators are available without a physician's prescription, these medicines should not be used unless a physician has diagnosed the patient's condition as asthma." Hearing-Impaired Nurse Files Suit Against Hospital:"A former Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital registered nurse has filed a lawsuit against the hospital seeking more than $750,000 in damages, alleging the hospital refused to accommodate her disability, created a hostile work environment, discriminated against her and harassed her.
The lawsuit was filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court by Kimberly Henderson, who said she has 4 percent hearing in one ear and 25 to 40 percent in the other. Henderson alleges she was forced to resign from Newhall Memorial on Nov. 19 after the hospital deliberately failed and refused to accommodate her need for a hearing-assist dog to help her perform her job duties as a nurse.
"Filing this lawsuit was a difficult thing to do," said Henderson, who says she lost her home and car after resigning from Newhall Memorial. "As nurses we don't do that, but it came to a point where what they were doing was wrong. It was morally, ethically and lawfully wrong. I went from an independent middle-class life to having my brother support me and my 2-year-old child."
Newhall Memorial spokeswoman Andie Bogdan said that since the hospital had yet to be served with the lawsuit, she couldn't comment on it." Category: Disabled Nurses, Nurses With A Disability Direct (Bedside Nursing) Patient Care Links ****************************************************

Help Wanted? Consider Nurses with Disabilities, Donna Carol Maheady, ARNP, EdD, Nursing Spectrum:"AS THE MOTHER OF A DAUGHTER with disabilities, I've been involved in handicap advocacy efforts for many years, but it wasn't until I conducted my doctoral dissertation research1 that I learned about the contributions that nurses with disabilities can make to the profession — and the regrettably scarce resources available for this growing group of RNs.
That's why I took a giant step two years ago and created a nonprofit website for nurses and students with disabilities. Called www.ExceptionalNurse.com , the site serves as a resource network for nurses and students with disabilities. It provides links to disability-related organizations, technology, equipment, financial aid, mentors, employment opportunities, and legal issues, as well as related articles and research. Since the website's debut, more than 8,000 visitors have logged on." Helping Parents Cope With A High-Risk Birth: Terror, Grief, Impotence, And Anger, Michael T. Hynan, Ph.D. :"Today I will talk about each of the emotions of terror, grief, impotence, and anger as they occur in high- risk parents. You will learn about my family and how we experienced these unfortunate feelings during my son's birth. And you will also hear the stories of many high- risk parents, who have shared their emotional struggles with me. I hope to be able to put some substance and feelings into abstract works like grief and impotence, to express the feelings that many times we high- risk parents hold back- - because we are afraid people and especially the medical staff will think we are crazy and that we can't handle our crises." Hemorrhoids and Rectal Bleeding, DrMirkin.com:"If you have rectal pain or bleeding, check with
your doctor. The odds are overwhelming that you have a fissure or a crack in your rectum that can be cured with antibiotics and a topical nitroglycerin
cream. If your doctor does not find hemorrhoids or fissures, you must have a tube inserted into your colon to check for other causes of bleeding such as
cancers, since one in four cases of rectal bleeding not caused by fissures or hemorrhoids is caused by serious disease (2). If you have a small crack called
a fissure or large veins called hemorrhoids, you can often be cured by applying a special ointment made by mixing one part of the commercially available (by
prescription) 2% nitroglycerin ointment with 20 parts of Vaseline (3,4,5,7,8,10). If you do not dilute the nitroglycerine, it can cause headaches. I also
recommend that both you and your mate take a long-acting erythromycin (azithromycin 250 mg once a day for 9 days)."

Lenore Henning, RN, Patient Safety Comes First for Forum, Nursingspectrum:"In these days of miracle drugs, cutting-edge surgical procedures, and high-tech equipment, it's easy to overlook the fact that something as simple as a clasp can make the difference between life and death for a hospital patient. Lenore Henning, RN, a nurse inventor from Glen Ellyn, Ill., came up with the idea for a clasp that secures the cord for the remote controls hospital patients use to adjust their beds and, more importantly - to - summon a nurse when they need help. Dropping the remote can be dangerous — and even deadly — for patients who can't get out of bed. Floor nurses would often solve the problem by tying the cord around the bed railing to keep it from falling."
