In aftermath of Delnor hostage standoff, Kane officers double up transport staffing:"On May 13, 2017, five days into his hospital stay, Tywon Salters raped and tortured the second nurse he took captive, an hours-long ordeal that ended when a regional SWAT officer shot Salters, killing him, according to court documents. The nurses, two other nurses and two patients have since filed federal lawsuits against the county and other parties they hold responsible for failing to prevent the situation from happening."

Prevalence and Economic Burden of Medication Errors in the NHS England, February 2018, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality:"Medication errors represent a significant source of preventable patient harm. Prior research has shown that medication errors occur frequently and are associated with a longer hospital stay and increased costs. This report from the Policy Research Unit in Economic Evaluation of Health and Care Interventions synthesizes the evidence regarding the burden of medication errors in the England. The authors estimate that 237 million medication errors occur annually and that 66 million of these errors may be clinically significant. The majority of potentially harmful errors likely occur in the outpatient setting where most medications in the National Health Service are prescribed. Costs associated with errors seem to vary widely. A prior WebM&M commentary described a case in which a medication error led to serious patient harm."

Letter: Hold local officials accountable in assault on nurse, #AlexWubbels - @sltrib:"Neither Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown nor Mayor Jackie Biskupski has the backbone to fire big, tough, woman brutalizer Jeff Payne, who hides behind his badge, nor his partner who just stood by and watched Payne brutalize nurse Alex Wubbels. This incident happened on July 26. It took nurse Wubbels to bring it to light, and only then did Brown and Biskupski pretend outrage. They simply got caught."

9 Reasons Why Nurse Alex Wubbels Made Me Even Prouder That I Am a Nurse, By Sheena Maireen Saavedra, RN (October 1, 2017):"The thing that bothers me the most, however, is that nobody, not a single soul, not even the supervisors or the other officers in the scene, had lifted a finger to intervene with the handcuffing and the pushing that ensued. They just permitted the situation to escalate like that, and even worse, allowed the nurse to be humiliated and to stay in the heated police car for 20 minutes. Unbelievable."

Charges: Billings woman may have infected hospital employee with HIV through bite (September 5, 2017, Montana):"A Billings woman who is HIV positive is facing a felony charge for allegedly biting a hospital security guard, which is a known way to transmit the disease. Christine Bigman, 48, was charged on Tuesday in Yellowstone County Justice Court with one count of criminal endangerment. According to court documents, Bigman was a patient at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings on Saturday when she was involved in a disturbance. Billings police were called to the hospital for a report of a combative patient who was kicking and hitting hospital personnel."

Commentary: A 'badge-heavy' approach was obviously the wrong one in nurse incident (September 17, 2017):"The video does reveal a lot about Payne's approach to conflict and negotiation. He relies entirely on the authority of his badge to pursue his goal, apparently without any consideration of less authoritarian approaches. In law enforcement the term "badge-heavy" is used to refer to officers who are quick to wield their authority over citizens and who will not bend or brook any disagreement."

Rep. Manzella Not Sure Nurses Are Getting Attacked (September 8, 2017):"In Montana, physical attacks on health care workers — mostly by patients — have doubled in just a few years, endangering other patients and causing hundreds of days of missed work. And nurses have sounded the alarm, letting lawmakers and the rest of Montana know about what they're enduring, very often with no consequences for their attackers. But when the Legislature considered a bill last winter to increase the penalties for those assaults, Rep. Theresa Manzella of Hamilton questioned whether there really was a problem. She said the nurses hadn't done enough to make their case, and she wondered why nurses hadn't provided police reports for the more than 2,000 workers' comp claims that had been paid in a recent five-year period."

Nurses are hospitals' unsung heroes, Thursday, 20 July 2017 (New Zealand):"Sadly, they also withstand a great deal of abuse from patients, while maintaining their professionalism. Hospital wards - especially emergency rooms, can be high-pressure situations. Patients, their family members and hospital staff can frequently be on edge, and tempers will flare. A 2005 study found that 34% of hospital nurses reported a direct physical assault from a patient within the past year. On my last night in the ward, a rather disgruntled patient unleashed a veritable avalanche of vitriol and abuse upon one poor nurse, punching a hole in a cupboard in the process."

Want to keep ER nurses from leaving? Focus on patient safety instead of satisfaction (August 2015):"Experienced ER nurses leave because their work environment sucks. Maybe you care, and maybe you don't, but one day each of us will hope and pray we have an experienced ER nurse who isn't overwhelmed and overburdened. I know I will. I want one who can listen to me, focus on me, and has seen patients with my disease process at least a thousand times before I roll through the door. I want an experienced ER nurse because I have seen experienced ER nurses save lives, spot serious problems masquerading as benign ones, and prevent errors before they happen. Who wouldn't want them in their corner?

Prevention of Workplace Violence in Healthcare and Social Assistance:"Workplace violence against employees providing healthcare and social assistance services is a serious concern. Evidence indicates that the rate of workplace violence in the industry is substantially higher than private industry as a whole. OSHA is considering whether a standard is needed to protect healthcare and social assistance employees from workplace violence and is interested in obtaining information about the extent and nature of workplace violence in the industry and the nature and effectiveness of interventions and controls used to prevent such violence. This RFI provides an overview of the problem of workplace violence in the healthcare and social assistance sector and the measures that have been taken to address it. It also seeks information on issues that might be considered in developing a standard, including scope and the types of controls that might be required."
