I inherited decent sized breasts from my mother, and I stocked up on all the equipment and ointments recommended for women about to breastfeed twins. I rented a hospital-grade, state-of-the-art breast pump, nipple cream to prevent cracking and dryness, and a fancy, colorful breastfeeding pillow, which you strap around your waist so you can feed two babies at once.
Contraptions like these are a phenomenon of the multitasking obsession of the 1990s and the new millennium. You can’t really be a supermom these days unless you can breastfeed, listen to NPR and work on spreadsheets simultaneously. My husband Alex and I attended a breastfeeding class where we watched a video that described various styles of breastfeeding, and we learned about all sorts of stumbling blocks one might run into—such as nipple confusion (when the baby drinks from a bottle and then refuses to go back to the breast). We both laughed, didn’t really understand how anybody could earn a living as a lactation consultant and assumed that our children wouldn’t suffer from nipple or any other type of confusion."
