Repetitive Motion Injuries (RMIs)
by Mary R. Higgins RN, LNC
:

Repetitive motion injuries (RMIs) are caused by prolonged repetition of tasks. These occupational hazards were once limited to assembly line workers. Today, this class of injuries that includes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome also affects writers, secretaries and others who use computer keyboards for long periods of time.

A Patient's Guide to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (Excellent Illustrations):"Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common problem that affects the hand and wrist. This condition, or syndrome, has become the focus of much attention in the last few years due to suggestions that it may be linked to occupations that require repetitive use of the hands - such as typing. In reality, there are many people who develop this condition - regardless of the type of work which he or she does."

Battling Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (repetitive motion injury, e.g. keyboard entry) through ergonomics (Tiffany Table, Kinesis keyboard):"Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) the most common of the repetitive motion injuries. It is a nerve disorder resulting from pressure on the median nerve where it passes from the forearm through the carpal tunnel in the wrist and hand. This article describes how one academic library, the Sterling C Evans Library of Texas A and M University, reacted as the number of CTS cases among its staff climbed in the past five years."

Officeplace RMIs:"Injuries and illnesses attributed to repetitive typing or key entering have decreased for the third year in a row, according to just released 1996 Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). In these latest figures available for injuries and illnesses serious enough to keep people away from work, repetitive typing or keying dropped six percent from 1995 to 1996 and a total of 17 percent since 1993."

Preventing Repetitive Motion Injuries:"Many readers are familiar with carpal tunnel syndrome, in which pressure develops on the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel, a narrow tunnel of bone and ligament at the wrist. Pressure on this nerve causes numbness, tingling and pain in some or all of the fingers. While carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by many factors, it is also a common repetitive motion injury in people who perform repeated motions with their hands. Mechanics and typists are two examples."

California's RMI Standard:"Scope and application. This section shall apply to a job, process, or operation where a repetitive motion injury (RMI) has occurred to more than one employee under the following conditions:"

Occupational Safety and Health, California Code of Regulations (CCR), §5110:"It is the policy of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health to conduct any inspection of an allegation of repetitive motion injury (RMI) to an employee in a manner consistent with 8 CCR §5110."
