Spotlight on Surgical Progressive Care Unit (SPCU), Sue Thompson, BSN,RN,BC, Southeast Missouri Hospital:"The Surgical Progressive Care Unit (SPCU) specializes in pre and post-operative patient care. Cardiac monitoring, administration of anti-arrhythmic medications, and post-operative open-heart, vascular, and thoracic surgery care comprise the most frequent diagnoses on SPCU. In addition, chest tubes, temporary pacemakers, and telemetry monitoring of patients on Oncology and Neurology is routine for this unit.
A 15-bed patient care unit, SPCU is managed by Evelyn Mills, RN,C, and assistant manager Becky Tripp, BSN, RN,C. Staff includes 15 RNs, five perdiem RNs, one LPN, nine nursing assistants, and five unit secretaries. The mission of SPCU is to provide optimal patient care while meeting the needs of the patient’s family.
