In what date (month/year) did you start your business?: 01.01.2001

What kind of nursing do you do?: I am an RN with 19 years current hands on nursing experience and 5 years experience as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. I have worked in various nursing areas such as Med/Surg, Home Health, Neuro ICU, Medical and Surgical ICU, Traveling nurse, and Clinical Manager of MICU/SICU. I have certifications in Critical Care, Trauma, and Legal Nurse Consulting. I have several national and local memberships, have taught classes for ACLS and CCRN training, and have worked extensively with policy/procedure creation and compliance, as well as JCAHO and OSHA regulations. I am licensed in Ohio and SC. A resume will be provided upon request.

How did you hear about the Nurse Entrepreneur Homesite?: another nurse/CLNC

How many years have you been practicing as a nurse: 16

Professional organizations you belong to: AACN, ONA, GAACAACN, NACLNC - I believe all have websites except the local AACN chapter (GAACAACN)

What made you decide to start your own business?: I was looking for ways to further my education, still provide patient care and advocacy, yet be more flexible in hours and have a greater earning potential.

Employment changes in career?: 3

What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business?: As nurses we are especially qualified to run a business because we are used to managing multiple tasks, many of equal importance, all "due" at the same time, or reasonably close in time, and without error. We are used to having many people give orders and advice, and are adept at knowing which are the right ones to follow and how and when to question the others with tact and professionalism. We deal with multiple personalities and cultures, see people at their worst and expect the best. We are constantly teaching -patients, colleagues, other disciplines, neighbors and others, while also being available at all times to most anyone who needs help.

These are all traits necessary to run a business because the clients all need taught, need to be questioned with tact and professionalism, have multiple personality traits and are from many cultural backgrounds. We are organized, know how and when to prioritize, and can still see the larger picture for the details.

Where do you work?: MICU/SICU for the last 16 years

Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: I am very concerned about the level of professionalism and the lack of respect and trust among healthcare providers as a group. In the "old days", a patient's best interest was always first. Now that is not always the case - the insurance company has to have a say in what can or cannot be done, regardless of effect on the patient, the practitioners, especially physicians, are looking over their shoulders to make sure a lawsuit is not sneaking up on them, and when a mistake is made, no one says "I'm sorry" anymore. Communication has gone by the wayside - between doctor and family, doctor and nurse, and in all possible other combinations. Not that there should not be some type of restitution when a grave error has been made, via settlement or lawsuit, but many times patients and families just need to be heard and have questions answered and get some closure. If we take time to do this before they go running to attorneys, or before attorneys send 180 day letters and list every name in a chart regardless of who, many legal actions would be avoided and perhaps insurance rates for medical professionals would not be exorbitant forcing good people out of practice thereby putting more of the population at risk by virtue of fewer practitioners.
