June 2000 What kind of nursing do you do? neonatal intensive care, pediatric, and newborn nursery How did you hear about the Nurse Entrepreneur Homesite? yahoo How many years have you been practicing as a nurse: Since 1978-- 24 years Professional organizations you belong to: AALNC, NACLNC What made you decide to start your own business? Son graduated from law school--now an attorney. I then completed CLNC course in Houston, Texas Employment changes in career? 4 before becoming travel nurse What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? knowledgeable, assertive, able to communicate well. articulate & dedicated Where do you work? Until 3 months ago also worked PRN at "The Baby Place" nursery in Largo, Fl. Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare: Nurses too stressed, impatient with each other. Hospital setting becoming too uncomfortable with patients filling out questionnaires at discharge time with questions of what nurses they liked and what nurses they didn't like. HOSPITALS ARE DOING ANYTHING to compete for patients "business" making nurses feel like "maids" to the patients--Allowing pts. to call "too many shots" on how & what things are to be done regarding their care or their children's care is regarding the nurses knowledge of what is really necessary and best for the pt. thus, disallowing the nurses knowledge and expertise. In my nursing career of 24 years I have seen how nurses have been previously viewed as professionals and looked up to----to telling nurses what THEY WANT DONE, and disregarding their training and professional knowledge. THIS APPEARS TO ALL BE ENCOURAGED BY THE HOSPITALS WHO ARE TRYING TO MAKE THEIR STAY AT THEIR HOSPITAL BETTER--competing with each other trying to each be most like 'the Hilton or Doubletree'. (wow! At first I didn't think I had too much to say, but it sure came flowing out!) Other areas of interest and expertise: I also do DNA testing as Field Manager for Genetic Technologies, Inc. ****************************************************** Nursingentrepreneurs.com is a networking and resource directory for Nurse-Owned businesses and nurses looking for an alternative to working at the bedside.
