Your Business Name (if applicable): Maria M. Church, RN, BSN, Legal Nurse
Consultant

Please describe your business and specialty: Reviewing medical records for
pre-suit investigation and trial investigation. Preparing records for
historical reference.
I have worked in Critical Care Nurses, Telemetry and Post Anesthesia Recovery (PACU) (recovery room) for the past
18 years. I started in nursing as a volunteer at 16 (30 years ago) in a
Pediatrics unit, worked in an hepatitis unit and Medical-Surgical unit as a
nursing assistant, labor and delivery with surgical scrub experience during
that period as an LPN, and an RN in a post-op open heart, medical/surgical
unit then critical care since graduation in 1978. I finished my bachelor's
degree in 1992.

In what date (month/year) did you start your business?09/00

What is your experience and background in Nursing?
(Medical/Surgical, ER, Psych, OR, etc.): please see above

How did you hear about the Nurse Entrepreneur Homesite?: Stumbled across
the page while trying to get my qualifications on as many sites as possible.

How many years have you/did you practice as a nurse: licensed professional
26 years

Professional organizations you belong to (are they on the web?):
(Specialty organization, ANA, NLN, Union, etc) AACN, yes; ANA, yes

What made you decide to start your own business? Physical injuries
suffered on the job has severely limited my ability to continue to provide
care at the bedside, which is my primary love.

How many times have you changed employers in your career? 6-7 times. Many
times I felt that the nurse patient ratio in acuity was getting to be
unsafe.

What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses
especially qualified to operate a business? Many nurses are detail
oriented near obsessive/compulsive. Many nurses want what is best
for the consuming public of health care and have found that the restrictions
of the budget decreases and insurance constraints frustrating and confining
at best.

Do you currently practice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting?
yes, long term and critical care.

If you are a practicing nurse, do you feel short staffing is affecting
your ability to provide safe patient care? Most definitely.

Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare
(Please note, a response to this question is mandatory for a free
listing): The lack of staffing. The unapparent and sometimes well
concealed lack of training of the professional staff. The mandate from
insurance companies and administrative staff to use unlicensed assistive
personnel, with grossly lacking training. These people are poorly paid and
many times take NO pride in a job well done and quality care. Many of UAL
personnel can barely speak English and at times refuse to speak English, and
sometimes do not know or appreciate the necessity of quality care and the
need to report all unusual findings to qualified nurses or professional
personnel.

Other areas of interest and expertise: I like to do counted cross
stitch, participate in church activities, and am an active reservist in the
US Army nurse corps.
