The definition of the nursing profession.
In the early days of nursing, nurses were considered doctor assistants who had little responsibility when it came to treatment or diagnosing an illness or a disease. Those days are long gone. The modern definition of nursing is: The profession that is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life through medical and nursing theory, as well as clinical techniques. Nurses treat and educate patients and provide emotional support and advice to individuals, families and communities.
Nurses perform diagnostic tests, record medical histories and study symptoms. They analyze results, administer treatment and assist in rehabilitation. Nurses teach, provide home health care and explain the benefits of exercise and nutritional diets. Physical therapy instructions and explaining how to self-administer medication are also in a nurse's job description and so is clinic work, public seminars, blood drives and running immunization clinics. Nursing touches the lives of everyone and the result of that interaction almost always produces a positive result.
Is a nursing career a right for me?
The healthcare industry is filled with all kinds of opportunities. Statistics show that 213,000 new nurses will be needed to fill vacancies in 2010 and by 2015 that number will be 382,000 nurses. By 2020 over 800,000 nurses will be needed to fill available positions. Hospitals are experiencing a critical shortage of nurses and are developing employment packages that are lucrative by anyone's standards. Flexible hours and three day works are not uncommon.
A licensed practicing nurse can earn $35,000 to $40,000 the first year and that's without overtime. A registered nurse can average around $48,000 and if a nurse has earned a BSN the average jumps to over $52,000. A MSN degree will earn a nurse somewhere around $63,000 and if a nurse has a doctorate degree, first year earnings will be in the $75,000 neighborhood. Those figures do not include insurance, vacation and retirement benefits, as well as other perks that hospitals are creating to keep nurses on staff.
Should I study nursing in a classroom or online?
Classroom study has always been the first choice for nursing students although that trend is changing. Classroom study can restrict students in terms of fulfilling personal commitments and work responsibilities. Tuition and the activity fees involved with studying in a classroom can also be an issue for some students. Online study is offering students the opportunity to maintain a balanced personal schedule and study at the same time which is a very attractive alternative, especially when you consider that online study may also be less expensive.
Studying nursing online is an effective way to earn nursing certification for those students that need flexibility in terms of study time. Students can interact on a personal level with instructors through emails and telecommunications without the distractions that occur in the classroom. Online study can be completed in less time than classroom study or a student can work at a slower pace. Online nursing programs have the same information as classroom programs, so students can complete theory courses, as well as clinical courses online and receive nursing certification without time restrictions and can save some money in the process.
Can I do all my clinical study online?
Most students are familiar with how classroom study works. All of the courses are taught onsite at a specific time. Clinical work is done in several places and it does require the student to participate with the class. Online study offers the student several options. Local hospitals host visiting instructors from time to time and online students can attend those sessions. Some hospitals use staff nurses to teach courses so students can attend classes that fit into their schedule. As the clinical courses become more advanced some hospitals may assign mentors to help students complete the work. Video demonstrations are available so some of the clinical work can be done at home and the instructor is always available to answer questions through emails and video calls. When all the options are considered online study offers flexibility and convenience to students who need to balance a work and family schedule with nursing studies.
