Sharon Obelsky, RN, A Moment in Nursing, A Changed Life, Nursing Spectrum:"Recently I was asked, "What has been your most memorable moment in nursing?" Many humorous moments came to mind. Of course being at all four of my grandchildren's births was wonderful; however, the following story has really affected my whole life. I do not take for granted some things that I may have, had I not become a nurse and had this experience. As a long-time maternity nurse, I often hear, "Oh, maternity, that must be such a happy place to work with all those little babies to hold and rock!" For the most part this is true; I have always loved it and would not work in any other field of nursing. Except for other maternity nurses, though, few people know how terribly tragic it can be, to be working when there is a fetal death, or what it's like to deal with issues of abuse, neglect, or poverty."

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, OCD, Psychiatric & Mental Health Links, Direct (Bedside Nursing) Patient Care:"Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, OCD, is an anxiety disorder and is characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Repetitive behaviors such as handwashing, counting, checking, or cleaning are often performed with the hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away. Performing these so-called "rituals," however, provides only temporary relief, and not performing them markedly increases anxiety."

Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing Profession Fact Sheet, American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc.:"Occupational and environmental health nursing is the specialty practice that provides for and delivers health and safety programs and services to workers, worker populations and community groups. The practice focuses on promotion and restoration of health, prevention of illness and injury and protection from work related and environmental hazards. History The first record of occupational and environmental health nursing in the United States dates back to 1888 when a nurse named Betty Moulder cared for Pennsylvania coal miners and their families. The profession evolved with the growth of industry around the beginning of the 20th century, as factories employed nurses to combat the spread of infectious diseases like tuberculosis - to - address health-related problems resulting from labor shortages during World War I, and to cut costs rising from new workers' compensation legislation."

Off-shift Nursing, OCTOBER 23, 2008, MedscapeNursing:"The other day I had a conversation with a nursing supervisor about the night shift, working from 7 pm to 7 am. Our conversation became somewhat argumentative in the sense that we were both questioning if the quality of care delivered by nurses during the night shift drops significantly. It made me wonder …. I have worked the night shift my entire nursing career. I could never return to the day shift. However, there are some issues that do occur during this shift. More often than not, I see my colleagues come in, plunk themselves down in their chairs by the nursing station and immediately focus on who is taking a break , "when, where, and how long." At other times electronic documentation begins before even evaluating the patient. How can you assess a patient without ever seeing them? Aren't you falsifying records or are you simply copying the previous shift's entries? This worries me…"

Oglala Lakota College / Nursing Program (ADN, BSN, MSN, PhD):"Nursing offers a wide variety of opportunities for those who choose to make it a career. Academic degree programs in nursing are developed to offer participants a career ladder approach, that is, you may earn degrees in sequence with one degree building on the next. For example, once you have earned the associate degree in nursing and become licensed to practice as a registered nurse, you may begin to work on a baccalaureate degree in nursing, followed by a master's degree, and ultimately a doctoral degree in nursing. Nurses with higher degrees fill jobs with expanding roles and responsibilities including research, education, leadership and administration. Some students start the "ladder" approach by first becoming licensed practical nurses. You will be exposed to upward mobility opportunities and pathways as you proceed through this program."
