Nursing Spectrum, A Moment in Nursing, Sharon Obelsky, RN, A Changed Life:"Recently I was asked, "What has been your most memorable moment in nursing?" Many humorous moments came to mind. Of course being at all four of my grandchildren's births was wonderful; however, the following story has really affected my whole life. I do not take for granted some things that I may have, had I not become a nurse and had this experience. As a long-time maternity nurse, I often hear, "Oh, maternity, that must be such a happy place to work with all those little babies to hold and rock!" For the most part this is true; I have always loved it and would not work in any other field of nursing. Except for other maternity nurses, though, few people know how terribly tragic it can be, to be working when there is a fetal death, or what it's like to deal with issues of abuse, neglect, or poverty."

NursingSpectrum.com, A Passport to a World of Opportunities Donna M. Tozzi, RN, BSN, PA, March 19, 2001:"Beauty. Art. Ambience. Medicine? I've always had an interest in beauty. It can be glamorous, peaceful, and make you feel good inside. How I decided to combine it with nursing still surprises me. I began to dabble in the area of beauty in college, where I had two desks in my dorm room. One desk was for nursing books and the other was for cosmetics, which I bought wholesale. Before parties or dates, a line of girls who wanted to browse through and purchase cosmetics would form outside my room. I was able to give my "customers" make-up tips because, in addition to taking nursing classes, I was working at the perfume counter at a department store and taking a course at the Westmore Academy for professional make-up artistry. From that point on, I knew that aside from being a nurse, I wanted to continue working in aesthetics as well as business." http://news.nurse.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2001103190354

Nursingspectrum.com, Being Your Own Boss: It's More Than Just a Pipe Dream, Patricia Ann Bemis, RN,CEN :"As ironic as it may seem, often the biggest obstacle to becoming self-employed isn't money, opportunity, or the economy but ourselves. It's the old self-defeating mindset of allowing fear of the unknown to quash your dreams before they can even begin to take shape. And although nurses are already accomplished professionals, becoming a self-employed RN can still seem like a lofty goal. I'm one of many examples of RNs who finally set aside a negative mindset that delayed the journey from employee to entrepreneur, and you can, too."

Nursingspectrum.com, Defining the Needs of Nurse Entrepreneurs, Marie Tobin, RN, BSN, MPH:"You want to work for yourself, but how do you go about doing that? More and more nurses are developing their own businesses. And they want to know how to grow their business and take it to the next level. The Entrepreneurial Networking Group for Nurses (ENGN) recently conducted its first annual survey of the educational needs of nurse entrepreneurs. "Our mission is to encourage, educate, and empower nurse entrepreneurs to realize their full business potential," says ENGN founder, Claudia Ellis, RN. "Our membership is growing, interest in entrepreneurship is growing, and we know from conversations with nurses that they have varied learning needs when it comes to entrepreneurship."

Nursingspectrum.com, Nurse Entrepreneur: Expanding Career Alternatives, Carolyn Zagury, RN, MS, CPC:"An exciting, yet somewhat frightening career alternative for nurses, is business ownership. Owning your own business is a risk, but there is no better prepared professional than the nurse to take on the business world. Nurses are often risk takers, which translates into the confidence to transfer our expertise into new potentials for personal, financial, and professional success. Translating nursing education, expertise, and experience into a business can be simplified by applying the nursing process."
