Space Nursing Society Prepares for Future Flights, By Debra Wood, RN, Nursezone.com:"Looking forward to the day when tourists visit space and of prolonged space exploration by professional astronauts, members of the Space Nursing Society prepare to deal with health problems in orbit or on other planets. “We’re trying to put down on paper what we know or expect, so someone has a place to begin,” said Linda M. Plush, MSN, CNS/FNP, Royal Society of Health, founder and executive director of the Space Nursing Society, Palmdale, California. “If you were a nurse, suddenly transferred to space, you would want some help.”

Aerospace Medical Association, Careers in Aerospace Medicine:"Aerospace Medicine, as a broad field of endeavor, offers dynamic challenges and opportunities for physicians, nurses, physiologists, human factors specialists, psychologists, bioenvironmental engineers, industrial hygienists, environmental health practitioners, and other professionals. Those in the field are dedicated to enhancing health, promoting safety, and improving performance of individuals who work or travel in unusual environments. Areas of interest range from space and atmospheric flight to undersea activities, and the environments that are studied cover a wide spectrum, extending from the microenvironments of space or diving suits to those of "spaceship Earth." Aerospace medical practitioners serve flyers, passengers, space travelers, air traffic controllers, patients transported by air, maintenance crews, and even mountain climbers and undersea workers. The problems and challenges these people face are quite different from those faced by individuals who live and work only on the surface of the Earth. The unusual nature of aerospace medicine's needs requires that practitioners have unique expertise. Specialized education in any of aerospace medicine's diverse facets enables professionals to develop and apply their capabilities. The diverse and expanding opportunities in the field make a career in aerospace medicine unusually attractive for health professionals."

Nurses' Contributions to the US Space Program, Barbara S. Czerwinski, RN1, Linda H. Plush, RN2, Barbara K. Bailes, RN3 ABSTRACT, AORN J 71 (May 2000) 1051–1057:"Nurses have been engaged in aspects of aviation and space endeavors from their beginnings. Although no nurse has been chosen as a potential astronaut, nurses have contributed to the space program in many ways. Nurses and other health care providers use technology adapted from the space program. The future of extended space flight remains unclear, although work continues on completing a space station for extended stays on the moon and trips to Mars. Nurses may be one of the health care team members on these excursions. ."
