U.S. Non-Commercial Medical Search Engines:"I posted the first version of this page in the mid 1990s, a byproduct of working on a U.S. government-funded medical research grant: I'd found it helpful and others did as well. I list below interfaces to the 4 engines--out of nearly a dozen--that work the same way now--July, 2007--as they did then. The internet has changed (!) and the idea of a one-page interface no longer makes sense. If you're looking for personally relevant health information--which I assume you are or else you wouldn't have landed on this page--you're far more likely to find accurate information by searching several different sources and then comparing the results: take HIV as an example."

Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE):"At its inception in 1994 DARE was known as a database of quality assessed reviews. Staff at NHS CRD identified potential systematic reviews and assessed them against a set of inclusion criteria that sought to select only those of high methodological quality. Since that date, the science of systematic reviews has developed considerably. The recent changes in the inclusion critieria for DARE reflect the improved quality of reviews published today. While it would be useful to refer to DARE as a database of high quality reviews, the staff of NHS CRD do not think this entirely appropriate, as some of the older reviews on DARE, while of the highest quality at the time, would not be considered so now. Therefore we consider it a database of quality assessed reviews."

Hardin MD:"As the name "meta directory" implies, Hardin MD is a "list of lists" - Its purpose is to provide easy access to comprehensive resource lists in health-related subjects. It includes subject listings in large "one-stop-shopping" sites, such as MedWeb and Yahoo, and also independent discipline-specific lists. Hardin MD subject pages indicate the length of lists in each subject, making it easy to see at a glance which lists are most comprehensive - These are often not the lists from the"one-stop-shopping" sites, but those developed by people within the field, which are well-known and frequently cited within the field, but not well-known outside it."
