Lobbyists That the Founders Just Never Dreamed of, Managed Care Mag:"Cynthia Berry rises at 6 a.m. to dress for the $500-a-plate fundraising breakfast she arranged for Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl at La Colline, a French restaurant near Capitol Hill. By 9:30 a.m., the health care lobbyist and lawyer is back in her Washington office at Wexler & Walker Public Policy Associates, returning calls and e-mail messages and arranging educational briefings for congressmen and staff members."

Mobilizing The Masses: Health-care lobbying used to be largely aimed at Washington:"State-of-the-art influence peddling is on display in a sixth-floor conference room at the Washington headquarters of the managed-care industry's trade group. There, a group gathers to set postelection strategy for HMOs and health-insurance companies as they await election of a new Congress and a new administration. The session is led by the president of the American Association of Health Plans, Karen Ignagni, a well-known figure in Washington policy and lobbying circles."

Policy Statement Primary Health Care, Registered Nurses Association of Ontario:"This is a critical period for health care reform in Ontario. The current restructuring of health services provides an opportunity to rethink delivery modes, to improve the overall effectiveness of the health care system, to strengthen the contribution of health professionals to health care delivery and to positively shape the future health status of all Ontarians. A strong commitment to the underlying principles of primary health care is critical during this time of change. The RNAO supports the philosophy and principals of Primary Health Care (PHC), outlined in the Alma-Ata Declaration, that was signed by over 100 member countries of World Health Organization (WHO) - including Canada- in 1978."

Large HIV Funding Cutbacks in Clinics & Hospitals By Bruce Mirken, AIDS Treatment News #335:"Public and private hospitals did get a little assistance in the form of adjustments to the Balanced Budget Act passed by Congress in late 1999. The changes give back about $16 billion to health care providers over five years by scaling back or slowing the phase-in of some of the BBA cuts. The hospital lobbying groups, though pleased to get some relief, consider the recent adjustments inadequate. Barbara Jones, senior vice president of finance for the CHA, notes that because "the largest portion of the [BBA] cuts were coming in the latter years, 2001 and 2002," most of the adjustments won't actually put more money in hospitals' pockets, but will merely reduce cuts that haven't kicked in yet."

State Specific:

The Politics of Health, California Report:"Health care lobbying groups, representing all facets of the industry, from insurers to providers, spend huge sums trying to influence state policy. For millions of voters, particularly older Californians, it’s a make-or-break issue at the polls. We’ll hear from the candidates and talk about the issues."

New York State United Teachers:"Today, members of FNHP benefit from conferences run by local, state and national unions. For the future, the focus is on professional development, with workshops on topics like public relations, consumer rights in health care, lobbying for health legislation, political action, and health-care organizing. Health professionals have come a long way since joining NYSUT. "The bottom line is collective bargaining," said John O'Leary, director of NYSUT's Organizing Department. "NYSUT listens to them, fights for them and gets results."
