Accutane Suicide Helpline:"Accutane has been linked with more than 1,300 psychiatric side effects including severe depression and more than 66 cases of suicide. The FDA now requires doctors to have patients sign a consent form that says they understand the risks associated with Accutane including depression and suicide. Pharmacists must also hand out a detailed warning brochure called a Medguide. Accutane is one of only 3 drugs that has ever required a Medguide."

Accutane, Toxic Chemical Injuries, Accident Attorneys, P.L.C.:"In 1998, the Food and Drug Administration advised doctors who prescribe Accutane to watch their patients for signs of depression. Afterward, the Hoffman-LaRoche, the maker of Accutane, notified doctors that the drug "may cause depression, psychosis, and, rarely, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicide." However, the knowledge of the potential danger associated with Accutane did not become widely known until a Congressman's son committed suicide. Rep. Bart Stupak says his 17-year-old son's suicide earlier this year may be linked to the popular acne medicine. Bart Stupak Jr., known as "B.J.," shot himself in the head with his father's gun in the early hours of May 14. Stupak was popular in school, a football player, and killed himself after a prom-night party."

Acne Drug's Psychiatric Side-Effects, classactionamerica.com:"A number of legal actions have been filed against Hoffman-La Roche, Inc., manufacturer of the prescription acne drug Accutane, to recover for psychological damage--sometimes leading to suicide--suffered by Accutane users. As of late 2000, the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had received reports of 66 suicides and 1,373 other psychiatric adverse events in Accutane users. Accutane was approved in 1982 to treat only a very special type of acne--severe nodular acne that had not responded to other therapies. Critics estimate that most of the 500,000 people in the United States who try it each year have acne too mild for the drug."

Accutane, Dermadoctor.com:"When I was growing up, acne treatment was completely different than the methods used today. Makes me sound really old doesn’t it? However, acne therapy has come a long way in the past 10-15 years. When I reached medical school, after years of unsuccessful acne therapy, I read about a "new" drug that made the worst cystic acne imaginable go away. Accutane was new in the early 1980’s and I promptly called my dermatologist to ask if I would be able to take such a drug."

Accutane for Acne, Drgreene.com:"There is no cure for acne. There are, however, a number of treatments, which can keep acne under control and prevent scarring. Which treatments are used depends on the severity and type of acne, and by the level of concern of the teen. Some are mortified by mild acne; others are unconcerned even by severe acne. The treatments range from mild and gentle to quite strong. There are a variety of topical and systemic therapies, physical therapies, and even surgery. The top rung of the ladder of acne therapies is Accutane."

Accutane and Other Retinoids, Leflaw.net:"Accutane is a prescription medication used to treat severe nodular (cystic) acne (a disfiguring form of acne that causes multiple inflamed cysts and scarring) that has not responded to other treatments. Accutane is a member of a family of drugs called retinoids, which are related to vitamin A. When taken during pregnancy, Accutane and other retinoids can cause very serious birth defects."

Accutane and Other Retinoids, March of Dimes:"Accutane is a prescription medication used to treat severe nodular (cystic) acne (a disfiguring form of acne that causes multiple inflamed cysts and scarring) that has not responded to other treatments. January 23, 2002, Skin Deep, Accutane didn’t depress me. It helped me live again:"The anti-Accutane crusade being waged in Congress by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), and by a sensationalizing mainstream press--most recently in its coverage of the Charles Bishop incident in Florida--may well leave the impression that the acne drug’s characteristics are all negative. But Rep. Stupak’s hearings and the recent press stories have all left out one set of voices: the millions of Accutane users who have benefited from the drug. I’ve used Accutane: It completely changed my life."

Accutane, Skinsite.com:"The most damaging side effect of isotretinoin is serious birth defects if taken during pregnancy. It is critically important for women not to take isotretinoin while pregnant, and not to become pregnant while taking it. Women who are, or expect to be, sexually active while taking isotretinoin must use an effective method of birth control. This usually means oral contraceptive pills and one other additional method of birth control such as a condoms for the male partner. A woman who does get pregnant while on isotretinoin must be prepared to have an abortion and must state this in writing before many physicians will prescribe isotretinoin for her. A women who has taken Accutane should not get pregnant until one month after stopping the medication. After that time, it's safe to become pregnant. Because the birth defects caused by isotretinoin are so serious, it's important not to share the pills with others."
