Montelukast (SINGULAIR) for Seasonal Allergies or Asthma.:"SINGULAIR is indicated for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in patients ages 2 years and older. SINGULAIR should not be used as rescue medication to treat acute asthma episodes. Patients should be advised to have appropriate rescue medication available. Use of SINGULAIR may not eliminate the need for inhaled or systemic corticosteroids. Patients should not decrease the dose or stop taking any other anti-asthma medications unless instructed by a physician. Safety and effectiveness of SINGULAIR in patients younger than 2 years of age have not been established."

Montelukast(Singulair), ACAAI: Montelukast Sodium as Effective as Loratadine in Treating Allergic Rhinitis, November 18, 2001, Doctor's Guide:"Monotherapy with the leukotriene receptor antagonist Singulair (montelukast sodium) appears to be as effective in treating allergic rhinitis as the H1-receptor antagonist Claritin (loratadine)."

Montelukast(Singulair), Special warnings, Health Square:"After you begin taking Singulair, your doctor may be able to slowly reduce the dosage of other asthma medications such as inhaled steroids. However, Singulair is not a complete replacement for such drugs, so you should not abruptly stop using them unless your doctor recommends it. If your asthma symptoms get worse or you develop a rash, numbness, or heart problems as you reduce your dose of steroids, check with your doctor. Such reactions usually result from a reduction in oral steroid therapy."

Montelukast, Side Effects, Medicine Net:"The most common side effects with montelukast are headache, dizziness , abdominal pain , sore throat , and rhinitis (inflammation of the inner lining of the nose). These side effects occur in 1 in 50 to 1 in 7 persons who take montelukast."

Montelukast, Description, MEDLINE plus:"Montelukast (mon-te-LOO-kast) is used in mild to moderate asthma to decrease the symptoms of asthma and the number of acute asthma attacks. However, this medicine should not be used to relieve an asthma attack that has already started."

Montelukast(Singulair), Asthma, RemedyFind.com:"Singulair (Montelukast) is a medication used to prevent and treat the symptoms of chronic asthma. Singulair (Montelukast) is a leukotriene receptor antagonist medication. Singulair for asthma works by preventing bronchospasm (contraction of the smooth muscle tissue surrounding the airways, which results in narrowing and obstruction of the air passages)."

Montelukast, Action, Skidmore's Nursing Drug Updates:"Inhibits leukotriene (LTD4) formation; leukotrienes exert their effects by increasing neutrophil, eosinophil migration; aggregation of neutrophils, monocytes; smooth muscle contraction, capillary permeability; these actions further lead to bronchoconstriction, inflammation, edema."

******************************************************

Montelukast, How it works, Whole Health Md:"Montelukast blocks cell receptors for leukotrienes, naturally formed substances that cause inflammation and constriction of the bronchial airways. Unlike broncho- dilators, which relieve the acute symptoms of an asth-ma attack, montelukast is prescribed to be taken regularly when no symptoms are present, to reduce the chronic inflammation of the airways that is the underlying cause of asthma. This prevents symptomatic asthma attacks."
