Contraceptive Pill Cuts Periods, Abcnews.com - 20/20:"One thing hasn't changed for women since the dawn of time — the monthly period. For some women, like 23-year-old Kelly, it's seven days of suffering every month. "I thought it was, you know, what women go through. It's something that you just deal with and it's part of the physiology of a woman. So I really just kind of accepted it," said Kelly, who asked that her last name not be reported. Nonetheless, a recent survey shows that two thirds of women would gladly reduce their number of monthly periods if they could."

Skipping Periods: Is It Safe? Woman Skip Periods By Taking Continuous Birth Control Pills, Dr. Rehert's Medical Alerts:"Karen Matous doesn't dread her monthly periods anymore, because she no longer has them. Extreme premenstrual syndrome prompted her to stop her periods altogether. "I was a bear. I mean, I had a monster living in me and it would just come out. It was uncontrollable," Matous said. Her OB-GYN suggested taking continuous birth control pills. Matous has been taking them for two years now. "I usually can go about three months and then I start to get a little breakthrough and then I quit taking them for four to five days and then get right back on them again," Matous said."

Can I Reschedule My Period (With Birth Control Pills), Go Ask Alice:"A good question that's surely been on the minds of many women... How can menstruation time be rescheduled if it's to arrive during vacation, on your wedding night or during your honeymoon, when you finally hook up with your long distance lover, etc.? A healthy woman's menstrual cycle can only be altered if she's already on the Pill and has been using it for a few cycles. How easily she can manipulate her cycle depends on the specific birth control pill she's taking, as some are more effective at doing this than others. Women are strongly encouraged to talk with their health care provider, gynecologist, or nurse practitioner before attempting to adjust their cycle."

New Answers About The Pill And Periods, Kirotv.com:"It's something many women have tried: taking birth control pills continuously to suppress monthly cycles. Now new research provides some answers about the practice. Birth control monthly packets are set up to provide women a week off the hormone so they can experience a monthly cycle. But do women need to go through a monthly period at all? Local researchers put continuous contraception to the test. Heidi Materi experienced heavy monthly bleeding and painful cramping. So she started on birth control pills. "And that really eased that and stopped the cramps," Materi said. But she joined a local study to see if her monthly periods could be eliminated entirely. "It's not a horrible thing but it's not convenient either, and you just kind of have to worry about, like is my period going to start today, do I have everything I need," she said."

'We Are Playing With Nature A Little Bit', Komo1000 News:"If you're a woman, at one time or another, you've probably thought about it: What would it be like to not have your period? Now, a Harborview Medical Center doctor says you can. "No mood swings, no cramps," said Sonya Daria, who participated in the Harborview study. "No one day a month spent on the couch with a heating pad. No cravings. It was wonderful."

The pill indeed can stop periods, Seattle Post Intelligencer:"They don't call it "the curse" for nothing. Periods may be many things for many women, but for some, they are a hassle. Now research published this month in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology confirms what many women have privately known for years -- continuous use of birth control pills can eliminate periods altogether."

Fewer Periods Experts Challenge Idea That Women on the Pill Should Menstruate, ABCnews.com:"A study appearing today in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology examines what happens when women extend their menstrual cycles using oral contraceptives. The study compared annual expenditure on feminine hygiene products and episodes of spotting or breakthrough bleeding in 24 women who followed a typical 28-day cycle with 21 active pills and seven placebos, vs. 29 women on an extended 49-day cycle."

Skipping period with birth control pill, Gardenweb.com:"Has anyone every tried skipping their period with their birth control pill? I just counted down the weeks to the Marathon (December 8th) and realized I'd have my period the week of the Marathon. I thought I remember hearing something that if you take only 21 out of the 28 day pack of pills (I have ortho tricyclen.) and start the next one immediately on your 22nd day then you can skip your period. Any suggestions??"

Many Women Taking Low-Dose Oral Contraceptives Choosing to Eliminate Monthly Periods, Viahealth:"With greater numbers of women utilizing low-dose oral contraceptives, many are opting for a new choice in their reproductive lives - to eliminate having monthly periods. With lower dose birth control pills being increasingly prescribed by gynecologists for treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), perimenopausal symptoms, severe menstrual cramps, migraines, and other menstrual irregularities, many physicians are taking this one step further and giving women the option of continuous contraception, or menstrual suppression."

Ending Painful Periods, Humana, WebMD:"I used to have periods that knocked me flat. Back when I first started to menstruate, it hurt so bad that I would almost pass out. I'd be sick in bed for two days with a heating pad over my abdomen, throwing up and crying from the pain. As I got older, the worst of the cramps went away, but I traded them in for something almost as bad: menstrual migraines. I had two young children, and I was taking the Pill for birth control the usual way -- 21 days of hormones each month followed by seven days of white placebo pills. That's when I'd get my period -- and the headaches. There were times when I couldn't come in to work. I couldn't play with my children. I'd just shut the door and let my husband deal with them. All I could do was lie in a darkened room with a cold rag over my face."
