Options for home bathroom modification depend on a number of things, most notably the user's functional needs.

Your safety solution might be as simple as adding a Grab Bar to the tub or wall or simply placing a non-slip floor surface in and around the tub and/or shower. You may need a Bath Chair or a Transfer Bench for moving from a wheelchair to the bath. If a higher tech option is more to your liking you may opt for a Hydraulic Bathlift System that lowers a person gently to the bottom of the tub and back up again for a simple tub transfer solution.

Don't forget the toilet when it comes to Bathroom Safety. Toilet Safety Frames provide extra support and are easy to remove and clean. Most frames are designed for use over a standard toilet or with the raised toilet seat attached. Raised Toilet Seats are another essential safety item for individuals with special needs in standing or sitting to use the toilet. Raised toilet seats are available with or without arms depending on specific user need.

Bathtub Rails Grab Bars

There are a wide range of bathtub rails and grab bars available. Permanent wall grab bars can be installed vertically, horizontally or diagonally depending on user preference. Permanent wall grab bars should be installed professionally as proper installation is essential for the safety of the user. If this option isn't right for you, the portable bathtub rail solution is probably the right choice. Bathtub rails come in a vast assortment of shapes and styles. Most bathtub rails are constructed of steel or a durable composite plastic (weight capacity is very important when choosing a rail that is right for you). Styles vary widely from single hand placement, bi-level and tri-level options (textured rails are recommended as they provide extra gripping power). Look and feel is also imperative as aesthetics are always important when making decorating decisions; adding a bathtub rail or wall grab bar is in essence a mini bath remodel.

Bath/Shower Transfer Benches

Transfer benches allow the bather to sit down on the outside of the tub and slide into the tub without having to step over the tub wall, which when wet can be a treacherous experience. Transfer benches are an essential safety item for the individual to move from a wheelchair to the bath, and are in fact helpful for anyone that can use assistance getting in and out of the tub safely. There is a nearly endless list of factors to consider when purchasing a transfer bench and we've put together a fact-filled chart for your use in making this important decision. A few things to consider are weight capacity, padded or unpadded seat, seat height, unique special features and lets not forget price. Hopefully you will find the chart useful in making this important bath safety decision.

Bath/Shower Chairs

Showering while sitting down is a common way for a mobility-limited person to avoid a slip and fall. There are some great bath/shower chairs available made for the sit down shower. Some of the important aspects to consider are weight capacity, with or without back, or if you want a chair that doubles as a commode. Showering should be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience; sitting down while showering can take much of the unnecessary worry and danger out of showering.

Toilet Safety

Toilet safety frames and raised toilet seats are the building blocks of safe toilet use. The majority of quality toilet safety frames are constructed of durable anodized, non-corrosive aluminum and are adjustable in height. Again, you should take weight capacity into consideration. Minimal installation (screwdriver or wrench) is required when adding a safety frame to your toilet. The elevated toilet seat is the other building block element of toilet safety and in the theme of bathroom safety there are many options to choose from. Elevated seats come with or without arms depending on the level of assistance required. Select seats also have hinges, height adjustability, cutouts for an extended hip position and much-much more. Consider your particular needs including weight capacity, height and level of portability.

Don't forget that bathroom safety doesn't stop with the products you lean and sit on. Accessories are important as well including Bath Brushes Sponges and Shampoo Shower Aids in the bath and shower. Toileting Aids and Toileting Hygiene are important additions for use on the commode. And remember: Don't take bath safety for granted.
