AllergyNursing.com: AllergyNursing.com is provided by Lois Turley RN, a Registered Nurse who has been involved in the field of Allergy Nursing since 1991. Lois currently works as Allergy Coordinator for Arkansas Center for Ear, Nose, Throat and Allergy located in Northwest Arkansas near the Oklahoma border and one of the fastest growing areas of the U.S. The humid climate of Arkansas along with the large variety of plants makes this area a "crosswinds" of pollen activity from early spring to late fall.

Clinical Nursing, Malpractice Case Studies:

Good Samaritan Laws & Acts. Do They Cover Nurses Volunteering Nursing Care When A Citizen Goes Anaphylactic.
"Off-duty" healthcare professionals rendering Emergency aid are in most cases "covered" by the Good Samaritan Acts. These are laws enacted in each state that provide some degree of immunity from liability for good faith efforts in giving emergency care. In this case, a nurse and physician were sued for providing assistance in a volunteer function at a "first-aid" station. Good Samaritan "immunity" was not recognized by the courts.

Fast Facts: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Allergies:"An allergy is an abnormal reaction to ordinarily harmless substance or substances. These sensitizing substances, called allergens, may be inhaled, swallowed or come into contact with the skin. When an allergen is absorbed into the body it triggers white blood cells to produce IgE antibodies. These antibodies attach themselves to mast cells causing release of potent chemical mediators such as histamine, causing typical allergic symptoms."

Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots):"Immunotherapy is a preventive treatment for allergic reactions to substances such as grass pollens, house dust mites and wasp and bee venom. Immunotherapy involves giving gradually increasing doses of the substance, or allergen, to which the person is allergic. The incremental increases of the allergen cause the immune system to become less sensitive to the substance, probably by causing production of a "blocking" antibody, which reduces the symptoms of allergy when the substances is encountered in the future."

Non-Invasive Therapy For Common Allergies:"Allergies are caused by an over-reaction of the immune system to otherwise harmless substances. Immunotherapy, an allergy treatment, seeks to retrain the immune system by exposure to small then larger amounts of the allergy-producing protein, commonly by injection under the skin. Treatment can decrease patients' symptoms."

Specific Types Allergies:

FDA and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG):"Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is used as a flavor enhancer in a variety of foods prepared at home, in restaurants, and by food processors. Its use has become controversial in the past 30 years because of reports of adverse reactions in people who've eaten foods that contain MSG. Research on the role of glutamate--a group of chemicals that includes MSG--in the nervous system also has raised questions about the chemical's safety."

Allergic Reactions to Stings from Hornets, Wasps, Bees and YellowJackets: Patient Information:"The severity of an insect sting reaction varies from person to person. A normal reaction will result in pain, swelling, and redness confined to the sting site. Simply disinfect the area and apply ice to reduce the swelling. A large local reaction will result in swelling that extends beyond the sting site. For example, a person stung on the forearm may have his/her entire arm swell to twice it's normal size. Although alarming in appearance, this condition is often treated the same as a normal reaction. However, because this condition may persist for 2-3 days, antihistamines and steroids are sometimes prescribed to lesson the discomfort. The most serious reaction to an insect sting is an allergic one. This condition requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction or "anaphylaxis" may include one or more of the following:"

Medication Allergies:

Penicillin: Adverse Reactions:"Severe penicillin hypersensitivity with anaphylactic shock is very rare and occurs mostly in connexion with parenteral administration (5 to 10 cases on 10000 treated subjects). The emergency treatment is based primarily on adrenaline (and, in addition, maybe intravenous corticosteroids, aminophylline). However, hypersensitive skin reactions (skin rashes, urticaria) are frequent (1 to 7% of the treated subjects). High concentrations of cerebrospinal fluid are neurotoxic (lethargy, confusion, myoclonia, convulsions). A sterile abscess can occur at the area of the i.m. injection. Hemolytic anemia, nephritis, and liver granuloma are very rare complications. Massive i.v. doses are associated to a risk of an electrolyte and volume overload."

Sinusitis: Sinusitis, Sinusinfocenter.com:"To some it's a head cold that just won't go away, to others it's constant pain and pressure in the sinus area. No matter what your symptoms are, if you have sinusitis you are not alone. Sinusitis is one of the most common health conditions in the United States. It is estimated that over 37 million people suffer from sinusitis and sinusitis related conditions each year and that over 13 million people visit their physician each year due to chronic sinusitis. There are two basic types of sinusitis: chronic sinusitis and acute sinusitis. No matter which form you have, you do not have to suffer. Both types of sinusitis can be effectively treated."
